Throttle Linkage Adjustment.

I just installed the revised Throttle Linkage Assembly covered by TSB 18-29-97 (Rev. A) -- Vehicle Bucking. It has helped with the bucking problem I was having but now I can't get wide open throttle, not even close. I followed the linkage adjustment procedure in the shop manual (adjust throttle linkage to get 5. 0" from the front throttle lever ball stud to the rear face of the throttle assembly bracket). The manual doesn't say what to do if, after adjusting to 5. 0", Wide Open Throttle can't be achieved. Has anyone else had this problem with the linkage adjustment. :{ :{

I have this "bucking" problem with my 98 also, usually right off the line starting in 2nd gear. Where did you get the info on the TSB and the parts to fix it? And how much was it to fix? I am looking on doing the one for the computer to fix the oil pressure problem right now. That is if anyone around here has heard of it.

I'm very disappointed with the new throttle linkage. If anything, the problem is worse especially pulling a heavy load. The problem with not being able to achieve full throttle travel is because the breakover torsion spring is not strong enough to overcome the two throttle return springs and the pump internal resistance.

I will probably put the stock throttle linkage back on. :{ :{

Have you checked the full travel of the cable? and is there more movement in the cam? If so you'll have to "shim" under the Go pedal to get more movment on the cam at the pivot point. Hope this gets you where you want to go.

Do a search, I know there are pictures on this.

I also recently put this kit on my 94. Paid $250 :{ but the shop that ordered it from Cummins said they only had one left, so what does a guy do :confused: . Either way, it took care of the problem except the truck doesn't seem as quick. I also think I'm not getting full throttle. After comparing the two linkages, it looks like the throttle rod mounts lower on the shaft coming out of the pump(I assume to help lessen the bucking even more, being there is less leverage). Have thought about making a bracket to put it close to the top like my stock linkage, but am not sure if this will help. What is strange to me is some trucks with the same mods and year as mine have never had the bucking problem. My buddies 98 12 valve also has the same bombs as mine, and no bucking problems whatsoever.

You likely need to adjust the bracket that you have now attached to the "speed lever" at the rear of the injection pump, to gain some travel. You can also make minor adjustments to the linkage (right and left threads) to lengthen or shorten the rod a tad.

Remove the two cap screws (m8 socket) retaining the shut-down solenoid to the solenoid bracket, disc. the solenoid arm from the pump, unplug the elec. connector and remove. Now you can see when the speed lever touches the high idle stop.

I like an assistant for this, you watch, let them push the go pedal.

Send me a pm and I'll walk you thru it over the phone this weekend, if it still gives grief.

I have a Cummins source that wants to add the the dwindling parts supply at Dodge, but I need some help with part numbers from the Dodge linkage kits (Cummins #'s) stamped on components.

Also, you can remove one of the return springs so you don't need your "40" lb. tennis shoe to push the go pedal. Always carry it as a spare as it will diminish the life of the single spring. I've seen the one spring set-up go for several years. .

Caution, re-ck that throttle will return and doesn't stick open to prevent a safety hazzard.

Good luck

Andy

Thanks for the info Andy. I removed one of the throttle springs and it helped alot to reduce the pedal effort. I'm gonna make some adjustments to the linkage this weekend and see if it helps. Also the linkage kit I bought is cummins # 3806215. Thanks again for the help,

John
