TSB and squeek in front drivers side portion of cab/dash

The dealer has been working on my truck for a week. They took the front drivers side quarter panel off and fixed some "broken" welds. I think they were "missed" at the factory. The squeek that started all this warranty work was not a "metal" sound rather a type of plastic high pitched sound. The welding did not fix it and I told them I was pretty sure it would not. I did want those welds done right though.



Now they are pulling off the dash to the firewall and trying to locat a pinch weld that may be causing the problem. The dealer is a good one and I have a relationship with the service manager that is pretty decent. However, I am slightly freaked about the rattles that will be caused by the disassembly of the dash and more concerned about my three gauges in my A pillar. It just seems that these things never go back together very well.



Anyone have a similar problem? I could not find the TSB the dealer mentioned. He did say he has done about 5 trucks so far with this porblem.

The TSB is for the A pillar to dash clearance. Both my 99 and 01 have or had a similar squeak in the L side of the dash. I have learned to live with it.

I had this noise from the A pillar area on the passenger side of my 2001. I took it to the dealer and they repaired it. Seems that they knew all about it. The had to remove my entire dash. I not sure if they found broken welds or not but I know from the smell that they applied generous helpings of RTV before re-installing my dash. Noises bother me ( I used to operate sonar systems on nuke submarines), I hear things that others just can't. I did not know that the noise was a TSB issue until I saw it in the TDR. I am happy now that the only noise in the cab is the roar of engine.

I have a simalar squeek in my truck but it is not from the dash. It sounds like it is but it is coming from where the transmission linkage pivots. There is a small plastic bushing that supports the pivot point of the the shift lever. it is held into a bracket by a couple of cheap clips on the bushing. Every time I go off roading and I get a little flex or frame twist the stupid thing pops out. I have put two in and still the same problem. Dealer just wants to install new bushing. I am looking for a teflon coated brass bushing that is the same size with a circlip to hold it in place. Hope this helps you... ... . Greg

Had same problem but on the passenger side, just sprayed some silicone in between the pillar and dash, so far so good.

Shleets, there was a long thread on this subject not too long ago. I had a real annoying sqeak coming from the back side of my dash or back of the underhood region. After some investigating on my own I found the source: the plastic liner at the base of the windshield. It had worked loose and the movement of the hood caused it to jiggle and squeak. I tightened the little plastic screw/retainer pieces that secure it and BINGO!!! Squeak killed completely.



Now what you tell me about the welds is interesting. For several months I've had a popping/snapping sound coming from the dash area and I really feel it through the steering wheel. Maybe I have some bad weld spots. It is quite audible sometimes.

Look in the TSB list for the '99 model year. I had the same squeak but decided to live with it rather than take to the dealer. It eventually went away.

First time on, long time observer. My '99 had an annoying squeak on rough roads & I found the weatherstrip between the firewall & hood to be the culprit. I bought the truck used but I like all my vehicles right( I own & operate an automotive shop). Noises sometimes can be difficult to trace down. Don't know if this can help you but it fixed mine for less than $20. 00 in parts. It seems the rubber gets tired. I knocked mine off by watching the grill guard going down the road & I could here the noise when it vibrated after hitting a pothole.

Didn't mention in the previous reply that the noise seemed to be coming from the inside of the truck in the middle of the dash. I know if my truck did it someone elses will too. Just trying to help.

Looks like something I can do, since the "Dealer" wants to pull the fender. Didn't see anything in the TSB about a fender

I took mine to the dealer a while back and they 'FIxed' the squeak. . it came back a few weeks later.



I think I'll try the spray lube trick next.

My fix was the same as Vaughn's. The plastic at the base of the windshield had worked loose.

Well I guess that I'll watch this thread as close as the last one as I've not been able to find my squeak. I thought Vaughn had it, but to no avail. I can guarantee that the plastic piece he had problems don't move. I've even bought a scope with ear pieces trying to isolate the noise. Keep trying guys as I'm at wits end.

I also have a squeak / creek in the drivers A-pillar area. I believe it may be the plastic closeout panel along the windshield, but have not had time to take off the wipers and remove it for testing. I did some impromptu testing in a parking lot,, climbing up and down a sidewalk curb with the left tires, which created the creak. I then did it with the hood release popped, but not the hood all the way open, and much quieter. i then opened the hood, no more creak..... Might want to try it. . I just have not had the time to continue the testing and find a cure...
