Anyone had this done lately? I've been having problems with them backing out and when I called my dealer to check the price of the straps they said the part # (which I got from Fritz's site) was not valid. Their TSB computer was down so they couldn't reference the number for that right then either.

Just don't want to take the truck in and get stuck with a bill because this isn't in place anymore.

Thanks,

Rich

There should be no bill, and you can do this TSB yourself in about 10 minutes once you have the straps. My pickup has had it done 3 times now... first time my Grandfather paid for it, as it wasn't a TSB yet, but he was re-imbursed (by DC) after I discovered it was a TSB and after some letter writing. Second time, after the first ones fell off, it was done for free as it was then a TSB. Finally, the third and last time, when they fell off, and the bolts loosened on me again, I went to York Dodge in Prescott, AZ, and the service manager wrote it up as warranty work, but just gave me the straps to install... I haven't done it yet, and that's been six months... I check torque of them every 1500 miles or so... ain't no biggie when you're under the hood alot. There's nothing to the install... use a 14mm socket I believe to knock the straps over the correctly torqued bolt-heads... don't punch them on too far though, as they'll loosen easier and fall off sooner.

Maybe I'll try to call Cummins tomorrow as I hadn't done that yet however, I think the exhaust gasket is toast so I wanted to get the warranty in effect and have them knock out the straps and gasket all at once.

I still would like to go to the dealer with a good part # and TSB # so I can limit the possibility of getting stuck with charges I shouldn't have to pay.

Also, there a nut or two on the bottom of that manifold that I haven't found a way of getting a wrench on. Looks to me like you have to move the turbocharger out of the way to get under there good. Maybe my hands/arms are just too big to squeeze in there.

Exhaust manifold bolt retention straps. TSB-09-002-01

This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 24-valve diesel engine built on or between engine serial number 56419738 and 56777585, with a date of engine manufacture from January 01, 1998 to September 22, 2000. This information is available on the engine data plate, which is located on the left side of the engine, affixed to the side of the timing gear housing.

Vehicles that are used for extended heavy trailer hauling purposes may experience a loss of exhaust manifold bolt torque. This condition may lead to exhaust gas blow-by past the exhaust manifold gasket(s) and even loss of exhaust manifold bolts.

A new exhaust manifold bolt retention strap has been released as a means of locking the outboard exhaust manifold bolts in place. This will prevent bolt rotation and torque loss during the thermal expansion and contraction cycles of the exhaust manifold.

Click above under the TDR TSB section and it is in the year 2000 under engine. Good luck.
