Thomas, I have installed the rubber boot on my alternator. It is to protect the battery post on the alternator from contact with an oil filter wrench. I don't recall the one on the brake dust on the wheels right now.

What is the fix for the brake dust problem? New pads? Mine dusts up the rims pretty quick.

My 2000 Ram paid its first visit back to the dealer yesterday at 34,000 miles for a steering issue. I too now have the rubber boot (p/n 4487042) installed to protect the B+ terminal at the back of the alternator. The secret to having this, as well as any other TSB, acted on is to complain - in this case I said that I had experienced sparking while changing the oil filter.

The service bulletin number for the brake dust issue that I pulled from the NHTSA site doesn't fit the format of a usual TSB - and my dealer claimed that they know nothing of a TSB with the brake dust. My reason for starting this thread was to publicize the fix for the unprotected terminal on the back of the alternator since I've read of a few members frying the 140 amp fuse and to learn more about the dust on the wheels issue.

Has anybody come up with a valid TSB regarding brake dust???
