I just installed my TST (w/original twins program) today. What an impressive unit. Talk about a kick in the pants. This thing gets you up and moving. IT"S AWESOME :-laf . One thing that I was informed with the twins program upgrade is that it allows your truck to dump more fuel early so a person can throw a good cloud of smoke. I have read that alot of you with a tst have been able to throw a serious cloud of smoke. This has not been the case for me :{ . I have had my box on 3/3 (since I still have a stock turbo and transmission) and my truck doesn't throw any more smoke than it did being stock. I'm very disappointed in this area. Is it because I have an auto instead of a manual? I installed everything that came with the kit exactly the way it said to, but no smoke. I know that this box is made to give a person the power, but the smoke would be nice. Anyone with suggestions on how I could get the smoke or why I'm not getting it. Love the power, but want more SMOKE!

on 3,3 you will likely not get smoke. on mine i have to push to 4,2 or 4,3 to get smoke. i normally run 3,2 just because i know it will NOT smoke. i would rather not make people behind me mad and hate diesels.

my stock turbo handled 6,6 as long as i kept boost under 35 or so. smoke is way crazy at 6,6.

the thing that killed my turbo was a 9,9 run and then suddenly backing off (because the truck was just too dang fast).

Copy that, 3x3 is not enough, The big jump I noticed was from level 4 to 5

On 6/5 - WOW!

I have the auto also. . I am a bit scared of the higer levels, but I can really get some big smoke on 5/5 if i'm running approx 60 mph and roll on the fuel pretty quickly. . It's not a consistant cloud, but what it does dump out initially is quite impressive. My brother isn't a big diesel fan at all, but he really gets a kick when I "smoke" a tailgater. :-laf

I finally took everyone's advise and turned it up to 5/5 & 6/6. WOW :-laf :-laf . Lots of smoke!! That's what I was looking for. The only thing that has me worried this that I waited until I was going about 20mph before I put my foot into it. I let off the throttle before the boost reached 35 but as I was slowing down, the turbo(still stock) was making a very loud airy noise as it was slowing down which seemed to take forever. I still had boost when driving home but the turbo was making noises I had never heard before espically around 10 psi. When I got home I checked the turbo fins and no movement up/down or side/side, but a little back and forth. The movement back and forth was very minimal, less then a 1/8 of an inch. I told this to my buddy and he told me that there should be some movement going front/back, and that I shouldn't worry if it was that little amount of movement. What do you think? I am going to let the truck cool down for a while and then take it back out. I'll let you know if it's still making those same noise. I hope not.

Is the sound your talking about turbo bark. usually happens when you go from high throttle to backing off fuel to quickly. My stock turbo doese this at times. more if I am going up grade but I need to be 4/4 or 5/5 for this to happen. I can run 5/5 no problems with my auto stock transmission. my friend who is a cummins mech, and TST dealer installer. took my stock valve bodie and adjust it to raise the the pressure. I do not know much on this or what he did but the truck is fine on 5/5 I do not feel any slippage on the transmission or any shuttering. check all lines and hoses incase of a leak check your boost gauge if you have a mech one incase of a leak. hope this helps.

this is the LINK to the thread with my turbo picture.

i had a harmonic noise with mine after my "run". the only real concern is to make sure there are no metal particles downstream of the turbo. you may want to pull off the hose going to the intercooler just to make sure.

if it is still making boost on 3,3 as it was before, then you are probably ok. just keep your ears open in case the noise gets louder.

my turbo is repairable. just needs a little polishing and a new set of bearings. nothing was bent or broken. it was still working, just sounded different, and in all honesty, i was looking for an excuse to upgrade anyway.

the Super B is a vast improvement and is working flawlessly

Well, my buddy and I took my truck back out after it cooled down and there is deffinatly something wrong. When I started to build up boost and got around 5 psi it sounded like something was grinding. He said it sounded like no oil was being put out into the turbo. I know that I did not shell out the turbo because there were no blowen lines inside the engine or any oil coming out the exhaust. He said there would have been a big mess if I did. I don't know much about diesel motors or turbos, I'm slowly learning, but the front side of the turbo (fins w/ no movement or metal shavings anywere, no rubbing on the sides) looks fine, but I was told that there is another part behind the turbo in the exhaust manifold area that my have some damage. Maybe a bearing out? I am going to take the turbo out and examine it. Does anyone know how to get to the two bolts on the underside of the manifold closest to the engine and to take them off? The two on top are no problem but those other two I can't seem to get to them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well now there you went and did it. Most likely the turbo is gone.

I have 26,000 on mine with probably 15,000 on the TST... not twins. I regularly run 5/5 and when I want more I set 7/7. Smoke like crazy on 7/7 when it locks the torque converter and boy does she launch.

I talked to TST at IRP2005 in June. The word is you can run all the way up to 9/9 on the stock turbo as long as your drivetrain is setup and you don't twist the turbo shaft off by slamming the go pedal to the floor. You gotta letter spool up before you lay into it. And you gotta watch egts on higher (above 5/5) settings.

You must have really laid into the thing on a higher setting. I rev it up some before I floor it. You also have to be careful on the other end too. Don't let off suddenly either when on the high settings.

Anyway... . now you can get your upgraded turbo... that settles that.

Well your right in one way. I was running it on 5/5 and I did let off the pedal to quickly, but I was going about 20 mph before I put my foot into it. I did this a few other times throughout the day and no problems. It did smoke like crazy (gotta love it) but I didn't even let the boost reach 30 psi and now I'm stuck with no truck until I can get the turbo fixed. I am going to be getting my DTT Trans. done in about a month and I think that I will have to upgrade the turbo at the same time since I now got a taste of what power I have. I also have an EZ waiting to be stacked with it after all the other work is done. Getting ready to tear into the turbo tonight. I hate not being able to drive my smoke machine :( . Keeping my fingers crossed that it is nothing to serious.

Correct me if im wrong here but isnt side to side movement(very little)not the bad thing to have... its the in and out movement that is bad to have on a turbo?

Jake, My buddy's dad is a diesel mech. and he said the there is always a slight movement front to back. Mine only moved a tiny amount. Now he said that if you could move it about a 1/2" to 1" front/back, then a shaft is thrown and that's not the case with me. I'm going to continue working on the turbo today, ran out of day light yesterday. I'll let everyone know what we find.

i can't remember for sure (age thing) how i got to the back nuts, but i believe i used an 18" extension and swivel socket from under the truck to break them loose. make sure to leave at least 1 bolt in the front. that way you can remove the back nuts safely and then remove the easy bolt while holding the turbo up.

i hope this is right

good luck

Whats wierd is some stock turbos die fast and some live forever and WILL NEVER DIE

Point - I ran 9/9 with ez on level 2 on the dyno and the street - Granded I did not bark it, But when I floored it, it was all at one time. Right from an idle

anyway, I ended up not breaking it, But told the wife it was kinda broken, Darn needed to buy a HTTSP66 :)

Anway, just thought that was wierd - Like Yo Hoot said - easy discision now to get a new turbo !!!
