I know that this is a rehash but I sure would like some pro and con comments. I use my truck as a daily driver and tow very occasionally (7000lbs). I just want a little power boost:D

I have a Powermax 3 and really like it. It's kinda nice to be able to adjust the power level you want, but one thing's a fact, both boxes achieve the same thing by making the pump work harder.

However, when it comes to adding safe power I always recommend going with Diesel Dynamic injectors before adding boxes. See,I could care less if I fry my injection pump,I am my own warranty station. Boxes are hard on pumps and injectors are not. If you share the same attitude as me,then go for it.

One thing to think about when choosing an upgrade... do it in the proper order, so as NOT to hurt your Cummins.

Also, I see your signature says ETH DEE. I believe I have read many times on this board that the bigger type boxes are much less effective on the ETH. You may want to research that a bit, and include in your choices a smaller fueling box such as the VA or PE EZ box.

I do agree with MikeR though... Injectors are an excellent choice. If you go with injectors, you may want to consider a boost module to allow you to take full advantage of them.

Do yourself a favor, and do a search for an old thread... Proper Order for Upgrades, by Ted Jannetty. Follow it, and your Cummins and your "fix it bank account" will appreciate it!

I just added a Power Edge EZ and it really woke my truck up. I went with it because adding the box is all I want to do until the warranty is up. My opinion: You will definetly be happy with the EZ.

I suggest the PE EZ first. That will really improve the performance of the ETH. You can install yourself in 10 min or less. I installed larger injectors first and my EGT's (which run high in the Stock ETH) went higher. Now adding a boost module will help bring the temps down but injectors do not give the low end zip that is so nice for every day driving.

When you add a box as the second mod most of them come with a boost module built in so you have wasted $$.

The PE EZ is not hard on your pump if your lift pump is good. It is designed to stay within the normal capabilities of the VP44. Most of the boxes that only hook into the data connector and map sensor work in this manner. Also my Egt's went down below stock. And that is the most important thing to watch!

First thing is to install a boost and egt gauge. I also highly recomend a fuel pressure gauge. Then increase fuel flow to the VP by installing the Bombed banjo fittings that you can find elsewhere on the TDR forum. I had no idea that my $120 lift pump was not pumping enough fuel until I hooked up a gauge and watched it go to "0" at WOT. And I think our Inj pumps are several thousand$:(

Feel free to PM (personal message or E mail) as I am replacing my 40lb boost gauge (would sell cheap!) and would love to help get you hooked!:D

Kurt, that's some of the best advice I've seen regarding BOMBing in quite a while, nice job.

Kurt's post left really little more for me to say, other than I agree 110%. Do it right from the start, put in gauges first and make one of them your fuel pressure gauge, it's as important as a egt. gauge IMHO. If you can afford only two gauges to start with, I would make them egt. pre-turbo and FP. You can always add the boost gauge later. Also, because you tow, I would stay away from anything over the Edge EZ or it's equal, due to the clutch, or lack thereof, in the ETH. The EZ alone makes a real nice power upgrade for the stock ETH.

See if you can find some dealer that you can try a VanAakin, excellent bottom thru midrange power. I know everyone will tell you it has no boost module, but I would not trade mine. Then try a Edge e-z. If you have gauges you should see more boost and the seat of the pants feel will be better. I added a boost module and elbow to mine and I see 32#.

Just thought I would add:

Ask Bret at Power Edge about the recon Units. At May Maddness they accepted my "slightly used only on Sundays" PE EZ box in trade in on a PE Comp. He said that they would test the boxes and resale them at a discount!!

And they offer a 60 day money back "TEST Period". :)

That's long enough to use up a set of tires!!
