What kind of power increase will this plate give a 160 H. P. automatic? I once sent an email to TST and asked this very question and got a reply in a few days. Basically, the reply stated that because of the various other modifications possible, they did not know what kind of power increase it would give me. After reading the reply a few times, I believe they were saying that they (TST) have no idea if the plate adds power or not. Kinda makes me wonder. Anyway, I would appreciate anyones help with this question. My truck is stock.

if you put this plate in your truck and the transmission is stock(or near stock),be prepared to do transmission work shortly. I have this plate in my truck and with very few other mods I dynoed just over 280 hp. This plate will trash a stock trans in no time flat. It gives lots of fuel early(smoke) and pulls nicely through the rpms. You have been warned.

Blackcloud, thanks for the reply. Your sig says plate, GSK and timing. Have you done anything else for power? TIA

Ronco, a #10... . yes a Stick plate works better with stock auto's, it comes in the fueling band later like 2200, and yes it will make good power.

Cop0110- I think what Jim means is that the #10 plate will be easier on the transmission than the 4-5-6 plate BUT will still trash the transmission eventually. The fueling hits later with more RPM on the transmission. The Cummins is an awsome transmission-thrasher! :D

#4 plate

Dad has, well I just put, a #4 plate in his. NICE! He does have a TripleLock TC in it which helps. transmission itself was sloppy already before we put the plate in. We are both wanting it to die so we can upgrade completely. He is well aware and prepared for transmission going out at anytime. With that out of the way... .

The plate itself is very nice. We have run a #4, #6, #8. The #4 plate is definetely worth it's weight in gold. I can't imagine the #0 which'll be next! Truck already had 20* timing, 14cm Turbo Housing, 3GSK, 370 injectors and Scotty K&N w/the number #8 slid full forward when we switched to the #4. It had a hell of a Go Hole(TC locked up in overdrive). Really pulled hard!. It was kinda slow off the line and didn't really impress until overdrive.

Put the #4 plate in along with . 191 Delivery valves(I forgot we added those too) It now reacts like it did before in the Go-Hole all the way through the rpm band, except the Go Hole now is faster and pulls harder.

I can not brag enough at how fun the truck is to drive. You would swear it was a sportscar by its attitude. The #4 plate, 370's, 3GSK, and 191 DV's are a great combination. You really need the DV's with the 370's and the 160 hp pump. It "cams" real bad at 1100-1200 rpms which although sounds cool, gets real annoying. DV's clear it up. Combination is very quick on the street, w/ good smoke control. Yet can cause a thundercloud if you want too!

Sorry to ramble, diesel performance makes me twitch!

True, because of the fueling curve of the #10 it comes in hard later in the band when the transmission pump speed is higher. I did a #10, 3K's and Timing not to long ago on a 97' stock auto and it was nice, power breaking it to 1500 then launching was nice and smooth then about 2200 it would come on hard and rattle the tires.

I thought Piers told me the #10 fuel pretty heavy on the bottom end and cut back on the top end. That why he suggested with for tight TC auto's with a GSK. I have never seen a #10 or it would make much more sense to me.

As far as peak HP with a 4, I remember Joe D. saying the 4 and 5 had almost identical peak on the dyno, but the 4 had a stronger mid range.

Thanks guys  I guess that I'll be getting a new transmission. I have a 1997 3500 4x4 no cat ,kdp fixed upgraded turbo stock plate slid forward and just purchased a 10 plate. Oo. Oo. Oo. I guess its just another excuse to spend more and make my wife happier:D What is the tc lock and where do I get one. Thanks again guys I love this place:cool:

ronco- when I did the dyno run,all I had in the truck was the plate,BHAF,3' straight pipe exhaust and 3k gsk and the tripple disk. Since then I have put in 215 injectors, bumped the timing to 16*,added the 4" exhaust and a turbo heat shield.

53 Willys-my torque at the time of the dyno was 715#

cop0110, It sounds like you're asking about toughest Torque Converter out there, which is the ATS TripleLok. I got my transmission ATS'd about 26,000 miles ago and it is AWESOME! I have a #6 plate and some other stuff, but my truck now almost leaps off the line, and lockup is something else! The ATS won't slip, I don't care how much HP and Torque you are making. Clint Cannon would be the guy to talk to. Clint's # is 800-949-6002. ATS is family owned and operated, they do all their own manufacturing work in their own machine shop and stand behind their stuff 100%.

That comment is a matter of opinion. rrausch is obviously happy with his choice of torque convertors, but there are other, better IMO, alternatives out there.

Seriously though, do a search and you will get a ton of info on transmisisons and torque convertors. These topics have been argued a tons of times and often get a bit heated.

Goerend

Suncoast

Are a few of the manufactures you will come across.

Best of luck in your search,

A #4 plate and GSK is the TC killer and it took out mine. The lockup clutch was shot and the output hub splines were getting really thin. That thing would have detonated someone in the middle of nowhere if I would have done any significant towing. Luckily, the wife understands preventative maintenance.

A #10 plate with stock governor springs is only rated around 220hp & 570 ft-lbs. A modest hp boost, but a big torque jump. That is meant to be the trany saver.

This is not to start a Bank's thread, but their original packages used a #10 equivalent.

I'm not sure the ratings of a #10 with GSK, but doesn't Piers also recommend that combination to prevent carnage?

I read a while back that a #4 plate with GSK can produce up to 290 hp & 745 ft-lbs. We didn't get a chance to fine tune the plate and gsk install before Blackcloud ran the rollers, however, his numbers were definitely in the ballpark at 270 & 715 on a dyno where traction was limited. I think his training wheels helped.

Nice list cooker.

Another one to add is Dunrite.

Mine were 292/680 with a #4 in the middle, 3K's and a 16 housing.
