First I would like to thank everyone in the tdr for all the info I have gotten from this forum!!! I am modifying my first diesel, ( thanks to you all for showing me a new money pit), and I have some questions. I have just installed a tst pmcr and I would like to know about the stock wastegate settings, boost elbow, and the like. Basically I know I will have to baby the trans. untill I get it upgraded, but I want to know about protecting the turbo and any other bits of advice anyone has to offer. Tis a slippery slope once you start sliding. TIA. Dave

I think it is easiest on the turbo if you just leave the stock boost elbow in place and let the TST box push through the wastegate to get extra boost. My EGTs finally hit 1250 on EZ level 4, TST level 3-3 when I hit the top of 5th gear from a standing start at WOT. Keep the boost below 35psi to keep the turbo from overspeeding and you should be fine.

Stock wastegate settings, boost elbow, and the like? There's not much to tell. The wastegate is simply a bypass for exhaust gas around the turbine to prevent it from over spooling. It is actuated (opened) via a rod extending from an air cylinder that has boost pressure behind it. The wastegate I believe starts to open around 24 psi and is fully open before 30.

The TST kit comes with an elbow that functions as a restriction for the pressure getting to that cylinder and it also has a small hole in the side to bleed the pressure off after it has gotten through.

The elbow is adjustable but comes pre-adjusted so you shouldn't have to mess with it. Your turbo will work great up to 30 psi and is safe to 35. Anything beyond that point is off the map so you're risking a turbo for little potential gain if you go there. Does that help?

Hey John, I thought the exact same thing about the stock elbow until I visited TST personally. They put my truck on the dyno and I witnessed the egt's with the stock elbow. Then I put in their elbow and did the same runs again and my egt's were 150° lower with only 3-5 lbs more boost. From now on I'll leave their's in unless it acts goofy when I get a set of sticks.

Hey Scott,

I agree with you 100% about the boost elbow being a better fit with the TST box on the EGT front. With more boost and the same fueling it should cool things off a bit (assuming the turbo isn't off it's map). I just think it's a little easier on the turbo without it since it runs a little less boost and thus spins a little slower... as long as the temps aren't out of control :) In my case I spike to 38 lbs and level at 35-36 in 6th, so I'm up against the wall anyway... for another week at least :p

John

Yea, that's a bit more boost than I'm seeing. I'll spike to 36 and settle out to about 33 on setting 6:6. That's as high as I'll go in the settings. It works for me.
