Fueling questions

I am new at this so be patient. I have a 04. 5 2500 auto quad. I pull a 4-horse steel trailer. Roughly loader is about 12000lbs. The altitude is about 6300 ft and the wind blows alot. I am looking at the TST & the Edge. 1st question: witch would get the better mileage & power. 2nd is do I need the plane boxes or should I purchase the adjustable boxes. I would love your in puts.

Thanks

Can't comment on the TST, but I get 1-1. 5 mpg better on level one with my Attitude. That is over the course of a tank of fuel compared to running before the Attitude was installed.

I prefer the adjustable box because I get gauges with it and I can choose to get better mileage or some smoke.

The TST PowerMaxCR is only an adjustable box also. I have had the Dr Performance Stage II box, Quad XZillaraider Race box, Edge EZ, Bully Dog Triple Dog Downloader, standard Juice/Attitude, HOT Juice/Attitude and now the TST PowerMaxCR with twins program. For towing type applications and mileage improvement either standard Juice or TST box will work. The Juice/Attitude may be a better choice between the two for that functionality simply because it is a little easier to install and has some additional monitoring functions. These are both timing and duration only boxes and probably a little easier on the engine than the pressure boxes. On the lower settings should improve response and mileage. There are a number of other options available; Quad xzillaraider, Edge EZ, TS Ramifier, etc. Bully Dog Downloader is another option. Do some searching on various boxes and downloader threads for user feedbacks, take your time. It does seem that most of the performance products in the mild to moderate level work fairly well.

I chose the TST PMCR. It's hard to say based on two tanks (how long the TST has been installed), but I used to get about 17-19mpg in mixed driving going very easy on the throttle, now I seem to still get 17-19mpg but my foot is to the firewall far more often, and I'm using the smoke capabilities to help convince tailgaters to back off. There must've been a fuel mileage increase, but I've not been able to back off the throttle for a whole tank to be able to calculate mileage that way. I assume the TST contributed more to the mileage increase than the MBRP equipment I installed in the same timeframe.

If you choose the TST, I would recommend the one with guages, simply because you can set it to back down when it reaches an exhaust gas temperature limit you can program yourself.

Heaviest thing I towed lately was a medium sized skid steer on a stout two axle trailer, and with the TST on 3/3 it was as if it didn't even know it was back there. It surprised a couple of my friends doing that, since the truck they pulled it with to get it there (Chevy with a 350 and automatic trans. ) was working as hard as it could to pull that thing.

I haven't used the edge products, but the tst definately wakes up the CTD. Whatever you choose you NEED a egt guage, and preferably a boost guage. The tst gives you room to grow, and after you get your first box its only a matter of time before you want more!! Trust me my wallet and I both know all about it!! :D That said, you have to have some self-control, the tst is capable of way more fuel than the stock transmission and turbo can handle, egt can also be extreme with a stock set-up (gotta watch it when modded too). Do your homework, talk to some guys and enjoy whichever you choose. Any of the fueling boxes will make your stock truck seem way underpowered. Beware there is no going back, and remember your warranty is probably toast.

I agree witheverything RMalone said. I also have the TST and now have the mods to keep the truck intact. I towed my wife's durango on my trailer from FL to IA, the gross weight was around 15-16K. I towed on level 5/5, never had to take it out of 6th and got between 10. 5- 14. 5 mpg. see my sig.

I had a 97 2500 4x4 CTD with a torque/fuel plate from TST. I loved it but the truck got hot on hard pulls. I like TST but I like the Edge also for the trans protection. I guess it will come down to mileage. Does anyone know if the power specs. on the Edge are wheel specs or engine? Thanks for all your inputs.

The edge specs are @ the wheels. you WILL get hot with any box out right now if you don't upgrade the rest of the system. the turbos on the 3rd gens are too small for anything more than stock. with the stock turbo and my TST on 3/3 I could get to 1250+ on long hills while towing, now that I have a bigger turbo I never got above 1150 on 5/5 unless I hold my foot to the floor.

1250 that is nothing! at high altitude both my trucks would hit 1350 and stay there the entire grade when they were stock!

I agree the Edge Juice specs are rear wheels. I dyno'd 95rwhp over stock rwhp with standard Juice/Attitude on 100hp setting. I agree that EGT gauge is needed with any box. The box is $500-$1,000 but the supporting cast can be $5,000-$10,000 easy. I haven't broke anything yet but that is because I have spent the money up front. At least it keeps the down time to a minimum.

TST Box

I am running the TST box without LED readouts. I have mechanical gauges. I have found even with the mods I have made to my truck I can't run it over setting 4/4 without the EGT's going through the ceiling. I would not even think about running it over level 1 or 2 without doing some work to your transmission. Even a 6spd. I know you will start slipping your clutch. A friend of mine put in the TST and two weeks after had to drop in a double disc clutch to handle the extra torque. Good luck! :)

I was just saying that the turbo helped get more power to the ground and stay cooler doing it. I was backing out of the throttle to maintain 1250 because I didn't know at that time that 1350 was still safe, it would probably have gone alot higher if I would have kept my foot in it!

1350 is the max safe sustained on a 305/555 and the 600/610's can go to 1450 max sustained. Mark @ TST told me he put his '03 on the dyno and ran 1500 deg. for 20 minutes until he blew a boot, otherwise there was no damage to the engine.

Thanks again for all the inputs. I have done a lot of research like you guys told me to do. This is my opinion. TST seems to me be more of a "race" type performace package and the Edge is more of a "run stock" package. (I hope you guys understand that) I am buying the Edge with Attitude. It seems to me it has more safetys in the box so I wouldn't get in to much trouble. I was a hard to decide. Thanks agian.

Wolfej, I agree with your assessment. I've stayed away from the ultimate performace race and been very happy with my simple Edge EZ on level 3. I tried level 4 between towing trips but backed it down again to level 3 for the heavy pull. Unless I decide to jump on the bandwagon and look at a bigger turbo, I'll stay with the EZ.

Of course with a new turbo, stacking my EZ with the TST will be a fine clutch burner.

Whatever you do, heed the recommendations for EGT gauge.
