Tubo Lag & 48re Question on 600

First: turbo lag? Really notice it when showering down on the throttle from a stand still, like going into traffic and also when going moderate speed and have to accelerate suddenly. Seems about a 1 1/2 to 2 second delay. Then it goes like crazy. Is there a hit available on the computer at the dealers? Next. The 48RE when going into lockup in fourth with no load goes into it same time as going into fourth and makes a really BIG jerk/jump/bump. When under a load, like pulling a trailer, goes into lockup smoothly. Is there a "fix" for that available? Thanks. :) I have a 2004 1/2 "600" and a 48RE... It has the big exhaust. I put chip in my 99 and got faster response as well as increase in MPG... This "600", so far. (5000 miles) gets s--- for MPG. Maybe I can find a chip which will increase the turbo response as well as MPG. I sure as heck hope so...

I can only comment on the turbo lag. Stock, you'll have to live with it. It can be improved by opening up the intake with a lower restriction setup, and probably also by going to a larger exhaust.

A better intake (filter assembly) won't help much on the turbo lag neither will a bigger exhaust. The only thing that seems to help is more fuel (box or injectors) . Then you need the better intake and exhaust to help with the egt's.

We put a 4in exhaust and an AFE intake kit on a 03', nothing else and it came alive! Faster spool up and more power on the bottom end. With the stock fuel curve the intake is still too restrictive, so with a better breathing intake and exhaust you can bring in more air faster and exit more air faster.

John P. S. a fueling box only makes it even better!;)

Superdave,

The turbo lag on my 600 is as bad as it was on my '93, '96' & '99'. As for my '03 SO though, I guess the best way to say it, is that it 'exhibited no symptoms' of turbo lag at all. Obviously the turbo wasn't sitting there all spooled up waiting for me to say 'go', but pound the throttle & with or without the truck moving those tires took off. Race that '03 SO next to my 600 (both identical trucks except the '03 had a 373 and the 600 has a 410) from a stop light & I'd be looking at the '03's taillights for a time. Now stick a steep hill in the way & the '03 would wonder what the heck just blew on by :D :D :D . I always assumed they accomplished the quick response through creative injection timing. Don't know, but I miss that response on my 600. The lag's actually worse when doing 35mph or so and then asking it to go. 2-3 seond response time.

As for the T/C lockup, the 2nd Gens had a nice cushiony phase-in of the TC lookup, which was good for the 'experts' who test drive new vehicles and write rave reviews about the smooth shift/lockup, but wasn't so nice for the clutchs in the TC that were trying to lock when the motor was cranking out peak torque. I guess DC decided the clutchs in the TC were more important since they now slam-dunk them into lockup. (ok not so concerned as to give us a manly TC but that's for another thread)...

When my 600 was new, upon heavy throttle it would lock the TC while still in 3rd, and jump right into 4th without unlocking. Now though, it unlocks the TC, shifts into 4th, then immediately tries to lockup again, all in the space of 1. 5 - 2 seconds. Just doesn't feel like it's good for the transmission...

Turbo lag

The Turbo Air Guide (TAG) helps the turbo to spool noticeably faster and reduces lag. After market exhaust and air intakes can also help to reduce lag and provided cooler EGTs.

The lag is there for a reason. If your at a stop light on a 5 percent grade towing 16,000 lbs im sure you you would apperate the 1 to 2 second delay.

That is not the idea at all. . Case in point: last evening I checked the mailbox and as I started to pull back onto the hiway, a car came over the hill doing what was probably far higher than the speed limit. I floored it and seemed to stand still for more than a few heartbeats before I could pull out and over... There has to be a computer update or a chip to correct this. Other than that the 600 is a sweet engine in every way. Oops, also the poor MPG. :D

SuperDave,

I am curious..... what kind of mileage are you getting?

Just traded my V10 2500 for a 2004. 5 dually and am getting about 12 with just over 500 miles on the truck. Hope this improves. Although I have to admit it is already better than the V10s steady10MPG (about 7 towing).

The throttle response is something that I am going to have to get used to... ... out of the hole the V10 was immediate and the 600... ... well let's say it isn't as good as the V10. What I do notice is that the 600 doesn't go into passing gear like the V10 did at say 35-40 mph. I imagine this is because of additional torque to the rears and a different transmission torque and gearing settings.

Bottom line is I love the new truck. Give me a few months and I am sure I will be looking for improved performance.

Happy Motoring from the Burg,

my 04 had the turbo lag have changed air filter to an airaid system and the truck has so much more pickup and no more turbo lag

I have the AFE Magnum (I think that's what it's called) and a TAG. I still have huge turbo lag. Scares me sometimes. I did not notice a difference after adding either of the above. John

I am wondering if the AFE air intake makes much noise. I put a new air intake on my Toyota Tacoma and it was so loud I took it off.

It is not so much turbo lag,but the programed maps to keep the emmissions clean enough for 50 states standards:(
