I had a back rack on my '00 dodge, very heavy duty, and has a few factory options, or modify it to suite your needs.

i put in those rear-facing lights so i can see into the bed at night. the inner pattern 6 angle pieces are actually octagon, but you obviously can't tell from far away (or close for that matter). took about a half a day to figure out a good design, but back to basics- that was best. there's two arms that go to the bottom of the bed to give it support. there's also two chain link pieces on the sides and two underneath on those arms so i have something to tie to in the front.

here's the one my dad made for his own truck. matching DuPont light pewter metallic paint #'s with clear coat over it:

just some ideas. .

I have a back rack and it's great. Plenty of room for 2 of these (two more on the bumper) and an antenna for my CB in the middle. As mentioned by LROX there are plenty of options for add ons or you can make your own. Very solid for tying things down or keepin em from flying through the back window.

I'll second the "Build your own" option - even though I didn't build mine, it is a custom job by the guy I got my truck from. It's made from 2 inch tube steel with 3/4 inch tubes making up the frame for the grating to keep things in the back, instead of in the cab. The pic isn't great, but you can get the idea. If you want any more pics, just let me know and I'll see what I can dig up.

The diagonal pieces are welded to a 2 inch wide, 1/4 inch thick plate that runs the length of each bed rail. The rails and rack are one solid unit that bolt into the stake pockets somehow - I don't know the exact setup as I've never taken it off.

thnaks for the ideas

thanks for the many suggestions and the ideas. I guess our "wants" are very seldom off the shelf cause we are very particular concerning our trucks... how do I go about finding a fabricator? Should I check with the local performance/race shops?

I want a round tubular rack/bar that fits with/around my diamond plate tool box and it certainly has to look good also.

I am a fabricator

but

I would think there are some good welder/ fabricators a little closer to you than me

shipping would be as much as the cost of the rack itself

and I would want your truck and tool box here to make sure everything fits exactly the way you want it

check yellow pages for starters

ask buddies

word of mouth is usually a good way to find good people

try to see some of their work if you can

that way u know what to expect out of them

just like anything else, theres excellent welder/fabricators and there are terrible welder/fabricators

yep. fabricating is more of an art than a skill (my dad is a welder/fabricator by trade and can think up how to fabricate in ways i usually don't). however, a good way to tell if a welder takes his/her work seriously is to look at the welds. are the beads just plain weld, or are they in the shape of overlapped "C's". pipe, or crap welding, they usually don't care on the bead--just check with personal stuff for a clean finish.

are we talking the national debt ?

as a working stiff with family to support I need to ask, what might a quality job cost? Ain't going for low bid but I don't want a lien on the truck either. Now if I could get a lien on the dependents... ... ... ... hey, then I could default and they're gone !!!! what a great idea !!!!;)

i would say $200-$400 for a custom headrack depending on labor, materials (most welders should have enough in scraps except maybe for the main stuff), and paint.
