Some of you frequent web site reader might remember reading Part I about 2 ½ years ago where this rich kid that live down the street from me bought a new Toyota Tundra with a 5. 7 gasser. He challenged me on a tug-o-war with my Megacab. He asked that it must be best of 3 pulls. Long story short I gave him the first pull and I took the last two. I took $1,500 from this rich kid then.

Anyway, he is back at it again taunting me for round II. He bought a newer model Tundra (might be a 2010 not sure) and apparently from what I heard from the grapevine he’s got an aftermarket turbo or a supercharger on it. I’m not sure how true this is but I know he dumped a lot of cash into this thing.

Here is the situation: He wants to do it this coming Sunday. My problem is I burned my clutch on the first pull at last May Madness dyno day (some of the members that attended can attest to the smell of my clutch). I am just babying this clutch till it finally quits. I do have Peter’s DD clutch kit sitting in my garage just waiting to be installed. The problem is no one around me can install it by Sunday.

My question is, do you all think my clutch will hold enough to win it? He wants three pull again. I don’t know what to do, should I just pass (he will laugh at me each time he passes by my house) or take my chances on a burnt clutch. However it only slips on 3rd or higher gear when I apply good amount of torque without downshifting. BTW $2,000 is on the line. :D Opinions?

Go explain to him, AND show him the clutch is shot.

If he is worth spit he will give you time to get the truck up tp pulling ability.

After all, would you chalenge someone with an excuse at hand???

yea whats the point of the pull with a burnt clutch. the last tug o war i had was with a s-10 blazer. this kid was like i can out pull you in 4 wheel low and you in 2 wd. i was like what ever but ok lest hook them up. needless to say i drug his little 4wd about 1/4 mile around a business complex. i did break both of his torsion bars when i took it over the speed bumps. lol all though it was a mean thing to do i wanted to prove my point and fixed his blazer at my cost.

So my point i guess is he should give you the time to fix your truck. i dont understand why he would want to this your truck is so much heaver then his. does he not get this???

I would get the clutch in before I pull. If He doesnt understand that. Tell him he needs to drain out all of his transmission fluid to make things fair. LOL!

There's something I've been wondering about these tug-of-wars. Seems logical to me that it's really a problem of tractive effort.

Why not put 1-1/2 or 2 tons of dead weight in the bed before going at it? Then the other guy is trying to tow something like 5 tons of dead weight plus whatever drawbar pull you can get from the engine. The additional weight simply helps your tires grip the road.

I would be a little more synical, I would pull anyway with a future bet, triple or nothing "best out of three promise" and if your clutch won't hold, you will make more money on the last (third) pull. I'm willing to bet that it will hold though, after all his truck is so much lighter than yours. HP should never be confused with torque. He might have more HP but at what RPM, that means he will break traction at the higher RPM, which will be in your favor. :-laf

JBonpua, isn't your G56, the lower gear earlier version G56. If I remembered correctly you talked to me about it in May of 08 "May Madness"

Yes being an 06 it is the earlier G56 with lower gearing.

I'm almost sure it will hold on 4L but not $2,000 sure. With all the stuff I have on the truck and full of fuel it weigh a hair over 9K lbs. I'm not sure how much a Tundra weigh but I bet I got him by at least 2-3K lbs so this should be to my advantage. In addition I probably got him by at least 300lbs of torque @ low RPM. It looks good on paper but the clutch is iffy.

Last time we did this I stood on the brakes till he lost traction and once I released the clutch and brake I dragged him around the block. My Smarty was @ SW 4. This time I think I set it on SW 9 and smoke him like an old coal train.

Id be hesitant to do it until you have the new clutch, I (well actually valet parking in Chicago) destroyed my stock clutch and once there burned they do loose a lot of holding power, Once the DD is installed, im assuming its a 3250, you have much better chances and if your stock clutch goes up in smoke while doing the tug of war you would never hear the end of it from the spoil little brat. Have you considered doing your clutch yourself? There not any harder then any other clutch job.

I'd wait until you get your new clutch. he may have smartened up since the last go. Whats the point if you know something is broken, how ever if you still beat him you could fully take the **** out of him. I raced my buddy who has an older Tundra with my 03. I was all fired up about my new smarty. He pulled up next to me at a light. He beat me across the intersection then the boost caught up with the fueling and I passed him like he was standing still. He has never let me forget that he got the hole shot. If I had done a boosted launch would have a different ending.

this kid's got some serious jealousy issues. i'd bet you'd take him even with the weak clutch. but maybe not 2 grand worth. tell him to keep his money and buy a real truck.

I'm a little hesitant too as I know the clutch is only @ 75%. I've been babying this clutch since Smarty was uploaded when the truck was 900 miles old. It lasted me this long because I always use 1st gear and I back off once I feel it slip. Yes I bought Peter's DD 3250 which I feel should be good to 500hp (my max goal).
It's true that should my clutch get toasted in the tug-o-war to the point where it had to be towed then I might as well move out of the country because I know he will ridicule me each time that fitly rich kid passes by my house. Although I've done clutch on smaller cars where I can lower the trans on my chest and roll it off. There is no way I can lower a G56 and a transfer case on my chest.
I think someone been giving him intel that my truck is not 100% and was smart enough to ask for a tug-o-war to redeem his lost last go.
I'm not sure if it's jealousy but I know one thing, this kid has so much money he doesn't know what to do with it but apparently he lack brain cells. I'm thinking the same thing I think the clutch will hold enough but not $2K worth. For the amount of money he dumped into this Tundra he could have bought a CTD and put in $30K worth of power adders and it will be cheaper than what he has on the Tundra.

Why run at all. You did beat him once, what do you have too prove. Tell him, no thanks I did it once, and I do not need to prove anything. I do not need to take any more of your money.

Then ask him this question. If you need to throw away your money, why not trade the toyota in on a real truck and buy a Cummins Dodge truck. But do this in front of his friends and then walk away.

Jim

I agree with Jim... .

My take on the situation is, if you wait til you get the new clutch installed, you probably will win, for sure. Your winnings will come close to paying for the new clutch job. Basically, the kid will be buying your new clutch for you.

If you try now, & lose, you will be out the cost of the clutch & be paying him $2,000. 00. You have a much greater financial risk doing the pull with the old clutch. I'd wait!!!

Good luck.

BTW, I saw your truck at the May Madness Show & Shine. You have a beautiful truck. Very well done.

Come on, JP... Don't let him push you around on the timing of the pull... just tell him you STILL have to have the truck repaired from the LAST time you pulled him around. You could even suggest, if you wanted to play it this way, that you were surprised that your truck even "broke" (or say was injured, since it didn't REALLY break) from pulling his Toy around and you could imply at the same time that even though he lost, his "l'il truck" was a "li'l stronger" then you THOUGHT it was going to be. I'd bet that would probably make him feel even more confident in his new truck (or should I say mislead him in the capabilities of his new, slightly bigger Toy ??) ... and THEN you could encourage him to WAIT until your truck is fixed by upping the wager by, say a $1000. 00, or double or nothing, or basically whatever YOU feel good about winning (or should I say stealing?? ;):-laf) from the kid... . Because with that new SBC DD 3250 in there he will have NO chance of winning, since you already know the techniques of winning a good truck tug o war, and even more so if you are able to maintain that nice (or should I say slightly unfair?? :-laf) weight advantage. Just my . 02..... you could probably win with even your slipping clutch... BUT it is only GOOD advice to wait until it is fixed... . if somehting DID snap on your blown clutch or oem dmf, then there is also a slight chance you could blow up even more of your driveline if the clutch or parts of it flys apart under high torque conditions. With that SBC DD in there, your good to take his money and pay for your upgrades in any way you want to. I almost wish there was a guy as silly as him living near me... :-laf:-laf

All of my talk about getting your truck fixed first notwithstanding, I can't wait to hear the rest of the story and learn how you decide to spend the money ... :-laf:-laf

I hope that guy loves that Tundra. My neighbor just bought a two-year old one. He loves the power, but can't make it to Vegas from San Diego without filling up! Not only does it suck gas,but even with his 4-door w/8ft bed chassis Toyota only put a 25 gal tank in that beast.
