Recently purchased 07 5. 9 with 14k and am not very educated on the 600's! Can someone help me decide on which exhuast will work better a cat back or turbo back, 4" or 5" Truck is completely stock and am looking to start building. Thanks!!!

Stock is 4 inch. If you are going to exceed 500 rear wheel horses and install an after market turbo in the future go with 5. Otherwise don't waste your money. Also its a bit louder with 5 inch.

You can install a catback, but, the 5. 9 doesn't have the DPF. That being said, i'd go turbo back to try to control EGT's a little better.

either go 5", or install a free flowing muffler. Like the others have said, the factory installs 4" on the 600 series and newer motors. The biggest restriction on the factory system is the muffler.

The biggest restriction in the stock exhaust system is the turbocharger. Expect very minimal gains from increasing flow capacity after the stock turbo. I would consider a larger turbo first. Don't go overboard to a huge turbo with a near-stock Turbo Diesel, as some of that “restriction” in the turbine housing and sizing of the turbine wheel is necessary and desirable.

I put a dual 4" cat back on my 04. 5 and like Joe said the restriction is in the turbo. I didn't see much difference in EGT's w/o a muffler. But it sounds cool:D and looks way better than factory.

Do you need the cat left on their to meet smog? I have a 03 no cat on mine from factory. I put on a 4in TURBO back exhaust. Think since you have an 07 that you have that exhaust reburner thing on your truck don't you?It takes the exhaust gases & tries to burn it again to meet emissions. If so what will happens if you take the cat off?WILL YOU PASS SMOG?????

07 5.9

FWIW- I have an 07 5. 9L that I use as a "road truck" for my job in medical sales. Right after buying my truck I cut out the cat and installed a 5" turbo back MBRP with a minimal resistance muffler. The pro's: EGT's are lower when pulling (have a 5th wheel), better response, and 1-2 mpg in fuel mileage. The con's- it growls when you are running 75 mph/2100 rpms so be prepared to have minimal conversation!

Overall cost in 07 before the prices of everything skyrocketed- was about $350 for the "aluminized" mandrel bent and about $100 for the MBRP 6" tip.
