I am just starting to learn all the finer details of the CTD, things that a lot of you have probably long since forgotten by now. Does my truck (see sig below) have the HX40 turbo in it? Can I tell by looking at it. About the only engine mods I have done is to install a K&N Filter, remove the silencer ring, and Had a JVD box installed. I know they blocked the wastegate on that install. With the box on the higher setting, I will see boost levels consitently hit 38psi, and have seen it once over 40! My boost guage is from a tap on the intake housing. On my way home after getting the JVD installed. I turned onto my road and hit the go pedal. As I was coming up on my drive, I let off the pedal abruptly. The smile :D that was on my face from the new found performance was quickly replaced with one of astonished anquish  when I thought I had blown off part of the intake tube somewhere, as I heard the Whump! Whump! I checked all the fittings and they were all still tight. I hear it every time under quick lift throttle when the boost is high. I guess I never thought that it was anything serious. I am glad that I have read this post.

Well, that being said, I would appreciate it if anyone can answer my question as far as what turbo came on my truck.

Thanks!!

Craig:

As "mopar" already said your truck has the HY-35 Holset

Turbocharger equipped with a 9cm sized housing. It is

very small. Most of the Dodge CTD's prior to model year

2000 came with the HX-35 which has a 12cm housing on

it. As many of the members begin "BOMBING", they find

that the smaller housings (even the 12cm's) can cause

the EGT's to be way too high. A common "fix" for that

is to install a larger housing (14cm-16cm). The 14cm

housing seems to work well on the automatics.

The HX-40 turbo, is the "standard" turbo on the 8. 3

Cummins engine. These engines are installed in

alot of the larger "diesel-pusher" motorhomes. The

HX-40 flows more air than the HX-35 or HY-35, however,

their "weak point" is that alot of them have failed

when boost is "pushed" past 40lbs. Members that

have them (including me) report that they do better

if the boost is set at around 40lbs.

Hope this has helped you some.
