Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) truck advise

My truck has 52k and I just started getting a little turbo "bark" when I let off suddenly in traffic. Some traffic situations simply require a sudden let off the go pedal and I'm getting the "bark" any ideas? I run an amsoil oiled air filter could it just be a dirty filter? The filter minder checks OK. Thanks in advance!!

If you truly are barking your turbo, this is BAD. I killed mine after four barks in the year and a half that I had it.

Take off the filter to turbo hose and give the turbo a spin with your fingers. It should spin easily and keep spinning with a gradual slow down. If you spin it and it only goes around two or three times, the bearings are probably bad. Also look for oil (black) around the compressor housing at the input. This is not always from the oiled filter. Don't get nervous about side to side play on the turbo shaft, that is normal, so long as it does not let the compressor blades come in contact with the compressor housing.

Your alternatives are

1. Learn not to dump the throttle during/after hard accelerations - drive a little less aggressively.

2. Buy a blow off valve - $$$

Rich:

I also get that. I noticed that it started happening more or should say is easier to do after I installed the 275s. So I just try to drive with that in mind. Previously with just my ez it would do it occassionally when accellerating hard and having to let off quickly but since the 275s it does it more often and I don't have to be accelerating as much. Have you recently added the 275's or EZ? If you have had the mods and it just started doing it recently then I would be interested in more info from others as well on this. I would hate to huff my turbo as much as I would like a new upgraded one the wallet just wont support that upgrade in the near future.

I've had the 275's for about a year and the EZ for 3 yrs and this just started. I really am not an aggressive driver it just happens when you are in traffic (LasVegas) and someone stops suddenly during your acceleration you got to let up. I will check the turbo and fix if it looks bad. Funny thing is it really doesn't take much to do it. It's only happened a few times but so unusual for this truck I thought I should look for some advice.

As soon as I added the comp and BHAF mine would. With the comp I get about 36psi on 1. Even when I shift fast I can make sure it doesnt do it by keeping the rpm up to about 1500 during the shift. Jake

As soon as I added my EZ I heard what sounded like the waste gate shuttering when I let off after a short burst of hard acceleration going up a tight twisting mountain road. My wife said she has heard it in the past before the EZ instalation, but I am half deaf and have never heard it before.

You Bombers with the high boost pressure are hearing what is known as compressor stall. When you back off suddenly at high boost the compressor wheel stalls and you hear what you call the Bark. Some turo jet aircraft will do the same. Some models even had compressor bleed valves to prevent compressor stalls. I beleieve this will induce abnormal stress on your TC and should be avoided.

I experianced the same after my mods when towing, I recently added a TAG and it has eliminated the bark.

Eliminated it or straightened it out?:D

Sorry, I am one of the jury that is still out on this product.

Same here about the TAG. I also removed my muffler at the same time of the TAG install. I think the TAG may have fixed my bark problem. TAG=tubo air guide. Fits into the turbo inlet just behind the silencer ring and improves airflow.

Now wait guys, I recently replaced my O. E. exhaust with a 4" Flowmaster system. The whistle/ howl I get between shifts is that what you're describing? If so I'd better fix things quick!! The truck didn't make this noise before the new exhaust and lord knows I don't want to hurt it now! 112,000 miles

This is really more like a coughing sound, either one long loud one, or several short ones, kind of like a non smoker that walks through the smoking section.

I think what you are hearing is the turbo spooling down between shifts.

Please tell me where to find a TAG. I need one right now!
