Hey Fellas,

I just ordered a 16 cm exhaust housing for my truck today and am planning to remove the turbo from the manifold when I install the 16 cm housing. I am also drilling and tapping out a hole so I can install a pyrometer. My question is, what is the torque specs on the turbocharger to the exhaust manifold and the exhaust housing to the intake side of the turbocharger? I don'thave a service manual yet, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey Jeremy,
Maybe this will help. Cummins manual sez; Turbo to exh flange should be 32 ft-lbs, turbo exh housing to center section should be 15 ft-lbs. Additionally, for your reference, drain hose flange to the bottom of turbo 18 ft-lbs, oil supply line to turbo 26 ft-lbs, the two clamps to hold compressor housing to turbo and exh head pipe to exh housing are 75 INCH-lbs. Also don't forget to pre-lube the turbo before start-up if it hasn't been run for a while, a couple of oz. of oil into the oil feed side should do, then turn the turbo through with your finger to spread the oil around the bearings, this will prevent having to do this all over again later. Hope this is the info you need.

Jones,

Thanks for the help. I have installed turbochargers before on Allis-Chalmers tractors, but it is nice to know what the Cummins manual says. I will post an update once I get everything installed in a couple of weeks.

R. E. , That's a good point about the anti-seize.
I usually use the silvery stuff. You know, open the container across the shop and pretty soon I'm wearing it on both elbows, the back of my neck and have even managed to get a dab on the dog. No small trick since the dog was at the park with the wife at the time. Seriously though, it's great for high temp apps and will even keep stainless from seizing or galling.
