Got my H1C off, when I did, instead of the nuts coming loose from the stud, the nut and stud came out together(stud and nuts between exhaust manifold and turbo exhaust housing). The old nuts are rusted on the studs. All four came out this way, nut attached to stud. Are these nuts and studs cheap/readily available?

Also I need the 4 bolts and those other thingies that bolt the turbo together between hot and cold side. Got the PDR HX35 and 16cm housing but no hardware to bolt them up. Are these also available as well? I don't want to use the old ones from the h1c btw.

Last ? visually/externally can one see a difference between the 16 and 18. 5 exhaust housings? I sure can't, and the old one is rusted pretty bad for me to read the numbers on it. Thanks in advance.

studs and nuts

You should be able to get new studs for very little money. Use a brass nut instead of steel. These are made in an extra length that will have plenty of grip and the extra length will cover the top part of the stud that rusts and makes the nut hard to remove. I always replace nuts on the exhaust system with brass when I do any work on that. Select a stud length that accomodates the above and you will be able to remove the parts later with much less hassel.

I thought from your replies that you had big brass ones!! :-laf

I think my nuts are steel ( :D ) with yellow dicromate coating. They have come off easily a couple of times. That can be another option if you want to stay with steel.

For the turbo you should be able to match something from a GOOD hardware store. Use a good grade not the cheapo ones so you can get them off next time without rounding the heads

Ordered the 4 bolts and two clamps that bolt the turbo and exhaust housing together from PDR about $8. Nascar Mark told me to go to a hardware store for the studs and nuts and get stainless. Thanks Jay and James.

Studs are 10mm by 1. 50 thread pitch you can find them at a good Hardware Store. I used Stainless steel nuts. The hardware off your old turbo should fit and work on the new one - hot to cold side.

New stainless hardware. Oh brother  Where, oh where, are the days of reuse it till it breaks, then JB it? I have had bolts come off with the nut attached. I just thread the set up back on, tighten down, no problem. the problem i've had has been the one bolt holding the housing to the body- I have had to use the vice grips because of rounding the head off. New bolt went in that time.

Glad it all went well for ya, Bill. Did you ever get the plumbing nightmare figured out? I havent heard any messages from you, so I'm assuming yes. :D

Well about the best hardware store here, didn't have exactly what I wanted. They had the 10mmx1. 50 but one threaded side was longer than the other, and the short side was shorter than the original, making me think less holding force in the exhaust manifold. Long side may be too deep for the exhaust manifold. Looks like a trip to my local diesel shop to see if they have any laying around... then off to my intercooler guy for a 93 intercooler and other parts:D:D...

I have also had the nut and stud come out together. In one case I got them apart, in the other two . . no way...

You can re-use the studs and nuts, but that's cause I'm, ahhhh... hmmm... . frugal. . ya that's it. . :D:D

Someone told me and, I don't know if it's true, but, the studs and nuts are a particular type that will expand and contract at the same rate as the manifold and turbo housing so they won't loosen off... . now I have no idea if that's true to be honest, but hey, advice is free right. . ;):D

Now were was I... . oh ya... . MORE FUEL --->>>!!!!

Got what I needed, the flanged nut cummins pn 3818823 $3. 55 each, stud cummins pn 3818824 $1. 09 each or vice versa on the part numbers, since on the invoice the parts description the 3818824 is 'turbo exhaust stud nut'. The 3818823 is 'nut, exhaust stud'. PN's from a 89 manual. The two thread pitchs or whatever the correct term is different than stock. The side that goes into the exhaust manifold is same length and pitch as stock. But the turbo side is longer than stock with a different pitch, meaning you can't use the old nuts, have to use the ones supplied with the new studs.

Now ? is do I just finger tighten the stud back into the exhaust manifold til it won't go anymore?

Put two of the flanged nuts, flanges together, and jam them together with wrenches, then tighten stud with the outside nut. Once stud is tight, hold the inside nut and loosen the outside, remove nuts.

Guess everyone got distracted by the stud/nut problem, and they forgot your housing ID question. If you look in the manifold side of your housings there is an ID stamped inside one of the runners. Some wire brush work may be required to remove carbon buildup.

You can usually also find the size by looking into the housing-to-manifold inlet end... on the wall is the size as well... . at least that's were I have found it. .
