Just thought I would pass on some info that might help someone sometime.

A couple weeks back I was towing with my truck and when I approached a steep grade, the boost gauge only indicated a maximum of 21 lbs. of boost pressure. Normal on my truck is around 30 PSI. The exhaust temp also went higher than usual, and the power was certainly down from where it had been on previous pulls. After my trip, I started looking for the reason this occured, first checking all the clamps on the intercooler lines and the obvious intake and exhaust leaks. When I discovered the problem I was amazed!! The problem was in the line supplying the pressure to the gauge! The small line going to the gauge had cracked, and was leaking just enough to cause the pressure to go down. I went on the same trip this past week-end pulling the same load, and the power was back in full stride! Didn't realize such a small leak could effect the boost pressure that much!

I have to agree with Vaughn. I had my boost gauge tube come off completely and the truck ran fine, just no boost gauge. An 1/8" tube doesn't lose much air when you consider a 3" one is feeding it.

Vaughn,

I know it doesn't seem like such a small leak could cause that much power loss, but it di infact happen! If one thinks about it, it is pressure that increases as well as volume of boost air. I spoke with one of the Cummins techs at the School bus shop where I drive, and he said he has seen a loose bolt on the intake manifold become loose and cause the very same thing.
