I installed my VDO Vision gauges (turbo, EGT, trans temp)and the only problem was the boost gauge. VDO sent this small diameter very tightly wound clear tubing. I cannot get it fed through the firewall and into the pillar pod without kinking the darn thing and it is impossible to straighten out. Is there a better alternative? This is driving me crazy #ad

Thanks everyone. The suggestion for snaking the tubing inside another larger tubing was perfect.

Shleets,

The way I did my boost gage tubing after messing up one tube was to use a small piece of copper tubing that just fit the OD of the boost tubing. I pushed the copper tubing thru the firewall. (I have an automatic transmission so all my wiring and other stuff goes thru the plug where the clutch would have been. ) I put the boost tubing thru the copper tubing that way it fits just fine and is not pinched or kinked.

Shleets,I pushed the entire length of my boost tube thru 1/4" poly irrigation tubing available at a hardware irrigation dept. Not only will it keep it from kinking but it will also protect it from the numerous sharp edges under the dash. You won't be able to push the entire small tube though at once, just get a measure of how far it goes before sticking then cut the 1/4 tube and electrical tape to the next section of 1/4" tubing till you're there.

Shleets,
How do you like the look of the VDO Visions? What color do they illuminate? Do you find them too bright for night driving? I am curious because I'm currently deciding which guages to buy for the Cummins. I had an Autometer gauge on another truck and I didn't really like their lighting.

Maybe someone out there can send me a pic of an illuminated (at night) VDO Vision?

You can use machanics wire. See if it will fit inside the tube and and feed your plastic hose. Steve Fyfe

I really like the gauges at night. They are back lit not rim lit (like your dash lights). In other words the light shines through the numbers rather than around the edge. They come with red or green covers or you can leave them white. The green matches the factory almost exactly. I have them hooked to my dimming switch so they dim with the dash lights. They are not to bright at all, esp. with the green covers. With the white they could be a little distracting.

The best way that I have found to unwrap those little plastic tubes are to heat them up before using. Hairdryer works but the best by far is my 110 BTU salamander heater. 2 minutes and they are straight and pliable. Hope this helps.

Worked perfectly!!! Thanks. #ad

I slid a piece of 14Gauge solid wire(like in romex wire)in the tubing and it kept the tubing straight. I taped the end of the tubing.

Shleets,
What # boost is the uppermost reading on the gauge. I like them, but NEED a 50# boost gauge to live. If you can, let me know where you got them and what part numbers they are. It's time for the A. W. D. team to move into the future gauge-wise.

Chris, the VDO unit only goes to 30psi. There is not a 50 psi available from the VDO Vision series #ad

The gauges are without a doubt the best, most "factory looking" gauges available. The Vision series EGT is pretty cool also. Its range is 250 to 1650 with a full 270 degree sweep. The trans temp is 150-400. A little high for the application but it matches the other gauges perfectly and it looks great at night. My friends thought they were factory options. www.egauges.com

Good luck

Chris,a 80 psi mechanical oil pressure gauge will work,I'm pretty sure you can get one in VDO. Let's see if you can get your turbo to zap that one.

illflem, VDO has the following boost or pressure gauges in their Vision series line: 0-30 psi "BOOST" gauge, 0-100 "PSI" pressure gauge as well as a 0-150 "PSI" pressure gauge.

I used an Aeroquip -03 AN Teflon/braided stainless steel boost line from the source to my gauge... no leaks and no noise.

Recycle Bin: Prime-Loc fuel filter relocation kit (due to flow restriction), Bosch 275s & VA CPC (upgraded to DD3s... WOW! what a difference!), '00 Dodge/Cummins valve cover (going back to my OE '98. 5 valve cover... tricked out though), VDO Vision gauges (upgraded to $PA gauges. . three of 'em... where's that  when you need it? LOL)

Cooker, you will REALLY like the look of the VDO Vision series gauges. As Shleets stated, they use through the gauge lighting which is the same as the factory instrumentation on '98 and newer Rams (assuming you use the green bulb covers). In addition, they also employ fiber optic needles... also mirroring the factory instrumentation. NOTHING on the market looks as close to factory as the VDO Vision series gauges.

... . having said that (and had my VDO Vision gauges installed for over two years now), I'm currently switching them out for my newly purchased (qty. 3) SPA combination gauges.

I installed all the gauges already wired on the A pillar. I then routed the wires and boost line thru as I installed the pillar. Piece of cake #ad

Big A
