I've seen this equipment on several of the signatures. How does it work and what are the benefits to a turbo control boost elbow?

All it does is allow you to control when you want your wastegate to open. There is a little allen head adjustment screw that can be screwed all the way for a pinched wastegate or back it out some to have it open later for more boost or sooner for less boost. I don't run a elbow and my line is just a barbed fitting on the AFC end and a piece of clear tubing running along the firewall and down to the WG actuator. My #10 plate gives me enough fuel to make 39psi of boost, so I just run it like that and don't even mess with the WG.

The boost control elbow comes as part of the TST fuel plate kit, but other creative people make their own. It is a small brass L-shaped fitting (about 1") designed to allow higher-than-stock boost levels before the wastegate opens and releases exhaust gas. The elbow partially blocks the boost signal from the turbo housing or AFC to the wastegate and is usually adjustable with an allen-head set screw. Since boost is increased with more aggressive fuel plates or injectors, something must be done to allow boost to extend past the factory 18-20 psi or else you wouldn't be able to burn the extra fuel. Where it installs I think depends on your turbo and housing combination and where your wastegate gets the signal. See TST Power Kit.

edit: doh!, too slow.

Joe,

Don't you have a 14cm housing from Banks? That came with a "big head" actuator. That actuator is set for higher boost... hence no need for an elbow.

Bob4x4,

I bought the truck about 3 months ago with the Banks Stinger kit already on it. According to the Banks site there is a BigHead wastegate actuator as part of the kit; however, there is no mention of a 14cm housing (or is this part of the actuator?). What size turbo and housing does my '97 come with? (showing my ignorance!)

Yes sir, Bob, got the Banks 14cm housing and according to the sticker on the actuator, the wastegate opens around 43 psi. I am not running the boost elbow that I got in my Piers #10 plate kit, it is in the tool box waiting for someone else to use it. Like I said in the second post, I just run a straight barbed fitting off the AFC and then a 6 ft. piece of clear 1/4" ID tygon tubing up and across the firewall and down over to the actuator. Looks much cleaner than the stock, known to crack, hard line running across the engine and exhaust manifold.

I believe the Stinger kit just gives you the "Big Head" actuator to replace the stock actuator. Your turbo on your '97 should have a 12cm2 housing.

I ran that 35/14 with big head actuator on my truck for a while, worked pretty good. 350/950 on Banks dyno doing some clutch testing. Just not enough power :D
