I have a 91( small turbo no wastegate ) and want to convert to the later model turbo w a wastegate giving me more boost and performance. Has any one done this and or no what I need to get. Was wondering if I needed to change the injectors? Also... w 117k miles engine just started to blow some black smoke on start up as well as underway. Sometimes in 3rd gear when I step on it I can see some black smoke coming out of the exhaust. The K&N air filter was just recently cleaned. I suspect that the injector/s might be somewhat clogged? Thanx for your help !

OK, the quick and dirty way:)

I scrounged local muffler shops for a "take-off" downpipe from an ISB (98. 5 or newer). I used JUST the exhaust housing and wastegate actuator from a newer engine (94 up, some later ones don't mount the wastegate actuator to the exhaust housing, avoid those housings), on my old turbo. Then, using a "take-off" turbo elbow (these are commonly replaced when putting on BD exhaust brakes on 2nd gen trucks), the downpipe was cut to mate to the orginal exhaust system at the joint below the passenger side floor, the "bell" on the downpipe was ground down about 1/4 inch to make it bend at a slightly sharper angle, and the whole mess installed. The wastegate was hooked up via small rubber hose and a hose barb screwed into the manifold just forward of the intake connection.

We had to bend the body seam, and using a large hammer, pound in the body panel at the passenger footwell to make clearance for the pipe.

The 12CM housing on the old turbo makes it spool like NOW!!!

It makes a whole new truck out of it :)

117k miles?

My dad has a '90 with close to 300K it has always blown a little black smoke..... the biggest cloud I have seen it put out was at BD Dyno Days whare it belched a 152 HP run when it had 270K miles on it.

Black smoke is ok..... blue smoke is bad!

Diesel Freak,

You've got one of the best sig lines I've ever read!

My 90 has 304,000 and always had a nice little black cloud when I started her. If I pitied the person next to me, I'd warn them to roll their window up before I turned the key. If it was a smart ass punk, I'd wait until they were right next to it and let 'er fly!
