Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Turbo Cool Down? How low should I go?

Hello Everyone, another small newbee question for the gurus out there.



I have been told may different things, so now I am going to the pros. Exactly how long should I wait for turbo cool down, what temp on my EGT gauge (I usually let it get down to 350, but then again I could sit all day and in might come down to 300 if I blow hard enough on it. ) If I am doing this right you should be able to see in my signature what I have, if it even plays a part.

i wait for my egts to get at or below 300*. i have read this on here before so thats what i do.

I also usually wait for my post turbo temp to come down to 300*. With normal driving, empty, it is usually there by the time I'm ready to shut the truck down anyways. I have noticed that my pre-turbo temp falls much faster than post-turbo, especially if you are running the truck hard, so take that into consideration.

I shut mine down at 300* (pre-turbo). It takes alil while to get there with warmer outside temps. But now that the temps. have dropped around here it'll drop below 300* pretty easily.

Thank you all for the fast reply. My sending unit is installed in the top of the exhaust manifold, could this be why my temps are reading as dropping slower or not going down at all? Or then maybe I am too impatient to give it enough time to drop????

Maybe just alil impatient. It takes about a minute or two for mine to cool down to 300* if it's been run hard or hot outside.

Just running around town I let it come down to 350*. Dont have the patience. After a long pull or an hour or so on the highway I let it idle a few minutes if I have to shut it down, usually gets below 300*. Preturbo.

300* for me, BHAF helped alot with cooldown

Allow extra cool down time when in hot weather and working the engine. The turbo becomes a heat sink compared to other exhaust parts.



June 2003, outside temp about 95 F, 5er in tow, I had the following readings taken with an infrared temp meter after the engine had been idling 4-5 minutes:

Pre-turbo ..... 280 F

Turbo ... ... ... . 395

Turbo Elbow. . 225
