I've read that fossil oil max temp should be <250 deg.; full synth oil max <300 deg. to prevent varnish from forming. After a hot day towing trip, at idle, my EGT's don't cool below 350 deg or so. My recent switch to Valvoline Premium 5-40 full synth helps me a lot in Winter & maybe holds up better at the turbo during Summer RV towing. Never saw any actual test results on mechanical equipment components, but I'm sure oil manuf. have them, eh.

June 2016 @ 232K miles, found turbo with radial play (reason unknown, amount unknown, but decided to avoid catastrophic failure with 900 miles to home) & replaced same. We do what we can & hope for the best.

Hmmm, well if the turbo does go on me at some point in the future, is it worth it to replace with an upgraded, performance aftermarket turbo or just keep it stock?

Also, with all the soot that's deposited in the oil by the EGR emissions crap, isn't it better to have regular oil that changed more often than have the better synthetic oil that's contaminated with soot?

For my part, I like the full functionality of the stock turbo with the exhaust brake. Since my duty cycle is primarily heavy towing. stock is good.

As for changing oil, I've followed factory mileage change schedule with synthetic for years without problem. Full dino likely works ok too.

I’ve always thought about a bypass filtration system. I think if I had a external EGR engine, I’d get one.

I’ve always had them in my rigs, and will again on this engine too.

With modern oils it’s much more difficult to remove soot that it used to be, but it still keeps any big pieces of soot out and other wear causing materiel.

To the OP, I think you're worried about nothing. My EGT's are between 3 and 4 hundred degrees by the time I coast through my neighborhood and get it in the garage. Never had an issue.
"...never had an issue." in how many miles/hours? That would help quantify your experience. Thanks.

Hey there Aftershock00; Returning from the TDR Diesel Rally last Sat., I thought my turbo seized, but it was my exh brake stuck closed. So I got curious about what turbo specs might I consider if forced to replace the stock Holset, 58mm I think. Bottom line, I ain't doin' it man! Too many variables involved that will render your machine unreliable, IMHO.

I'm getting 35 psig boost if needed & no worries about head gaskets, etc. After touring the Cummins CMEP facility & listening to some of their engineers describe aspects of the 5 year R&D effort for the new 2019 engine, I decided NOT to begin engineering a turbo upgrade for my dependable, hard pulling "Clyde". Good luck.

Wayne, I briefly installed a great Amsoil two filter bypass system on my former 2009 Ram 4500, but had issues with the brass fittings developing drips and the actual oil filter adapter loosening on the engine. I was afraid to coat the threads with Loctite, but I guess I could. I still have the rig. I took it off, fearing the adapter coming loose and losing oil.

In fact in the day I was towing an 18K Lb Travel Supreme with an 02 3500, I actually had the bypass oil system in series with an aux oil (transmission) cooler that dropped another 20' in the summer off the engine temps. Had valves I could bypass the oil cooler in the winter.

After I get back on my feet from the surgery, I may look at it again. Any thoughts about using Loctite on the brass fittings and the adapter?

Cheers, Ron

I think my signature gives that info. 300k+ miles and more than 20 years with both trucks combined. To each his own, just hasn't ever been an issue for me.

Hey Wiredawg: I was introduced to Loctite Purple for the small screws used in Model airplane RC'g. It's been serving me well for other (larger) mechanical fasteners as well, when RED or BLUE really wasn't necessary.

Loctite® Purple Threadlocker, also known as Loctite® 222™, has become one of our most successful products. Loctite® 222™ cures in 24 hours. It can also be used on low-strength metals such as aluminum and brass. This offers a lot of flexibility to the user. Find customer testimonials and more information on our purple threadlocker in “When and Why to Use Purple Threadlocker“.

As the Turbo is water cooled there is no harm if shut of with 500°.
Modern Turbos in general are not that sissies anymore then grampies old blower.
