I have a 2019 2500 on its way in a few weeks and I was looking at the online diesel supplement for it. It says that the dealer can enable a turbo cool down idle timer in various amounts of time. Does anyone know if it is user adjustable (dash menu) depending on how one has been using the truck?

It’s active on my truck but not as cool as you think. The ignition stays on once the engine shuts down, so it defeats the walk away ability.

If one can't lock the door and walk away it is kind of a worthless deal isn't it? Hope they changed for 2019, it would be nice when pulling a trailer instead of having more seat time.

Friends,
When pulling heavy, I pull off, shut off A/C, while wife takes dogs for walk, I shoot tires and axles with infrared temp gun. What amounts to 8 to 10 minutes idling, I shut down the truck. Same hold true when pulling in to fuel. Many times we are at interstate rest areas, and take 30 minute rest stops to stretch, walk around, and refill coffee cup.

I installed a turbo shutdown timer on my 02 3500, but now, after owning a Ram Cummins truck, its FIRST nature to allow cooldown for EVERY shutdown, 2 to 10 minutes.

Every truck had an EGT gauge as well. I purchased an Edge CST2 Monitor in May and got a FREE EGT sensor, so my Ram 5500 gets an EGT gauge as soon as I recover from surgery. Not worried about Max EGTs, although curious what they are, but more for being more precise about when to shut down. I'm hearing 400' to 450' on the 4th Gen Cummins. I'll baseline mine and report what I see and temp differences from my to be installed EGT and the first OEM one installed a couple feet back from the turbo.

FYI, I'm going to start a thread on after market digital gauges to share and discuss data facts and benefits. I searched forum and haven't found anything on broad gauge capabilities.

BOTTOM LINE: I don't want to leave my truck unattended running AND want to manage proper engine shutdown as part of the cost of ownership of a Ram Cummins truck. Those of us who've owned these trucks for over 20 years for the purpose of towing heavy will LIKELY give similar answers.

Cheers, Ron

This is copied out of the 2019 owners manual. Is this the same system as previous years? Idle Shutdown, This feature can be enabled so that the truck will automatically shutdown when the truck has been idling for a set period of time when the engine is at operating temperature. Idle time can be set in 5 minute increments between 5 and 60 minutes. See your local authorized dealer to enable this feature. NOTE: The idle shut down timer is disabled while the PTO is active.

Ron,

You're fine the way you do it. On quick on/off trips, usually toilet stops, I don't shut down. Only difference, not a technical one, is leaving unattended. We travel with dogs. Also, in my case, it's an old military security training rule that carries over to old civilian me. Whatever works for each of us is good.

Can't remember, help me, does the truck only run 15 minutes without fob in it or is that just with remote start?

BTW, do you have the U-Connect app on your Smart Phone. I have the older version that also displays fuel level and oil use as percentages.

Cheers, Ron

That's how it reads in my '18 manual.

I was at the dealer having the LED bed lights enabled and we messed with the idle shutdown timer to see if it was user selectable. When we couldn't find any selectability we disabled it, but I guess it stuck as my truck will shut down after 5 minutes now.

I'm tempted to ask the dealer to re-disable it, but who knows if it's worth my time. I can bypass it by using the manual fast idle, which is what I normally do anyhow for extended idling.

I simply hit the FOB to lock and walk away with it running. AC is never turned off and EB and TH are always on.

That's my normal MO as well.

No app, I'm not that advanced!!! I have no idea on the run time, seems like I have let it run longer that that without FOB in truck.

I installed a turbo shut down timer to go with my Edge CTS2. I have it set to shut down the truck at 380 degrees. I also have the remote turbo temp. probe also but haven't got the ba**s to drill the manifold. So far after 3 years it seems to work fine using the trucks computer EGT sensor. Sure makes it nice to just get to the destination, jump out, lock the truck and walk away.

I just installed the CTS2 Monitor in my 5500, trying to figure temp differential between manifold and 1st OEM EGT probe. Best guess about 400'F. But. it seems to take a long time to see temp drops at the OEM EGT probe. At idle with A/C off, still saw 300'F and I know it wasn't 700'F at the manifold.

What are you seeing for cool down times? Your estimate of manifold temps?

Thanks, Ron

I’m sure I’ve got the Edge set too conservatively. But I figure better be safe then sorry. Normal driving, say for 15 miles or so in the summer, the engine will idle 5 +/- minutes. Towing in the summer, it will go 10 +/- before shutdown. I really have no idea on manifold temps. I just go by the trucks EGT sensor #1 which can range from 450 to 750 on average. And I know that sensor does not accurately tell the true temp of the manifold if I had the Edge sensor installed.

When I was running a pre and post pyro on my 05 the difference was about 100° per 10 psi of boost. At idle, especially after towing, the post would read higher than the manifold temp unless I idled for a LONG time.

With the EGT1 probe being a little further down the exhaust I would expect a little more difference across the board.

Yes sir. Folks on the TDR reporting 350 to 400 degrees at the exhaust manifold at idle, so expect to see somewhere between 200 to 300 at egt 1. I have 1/4 mile gravel road coming off 35 mph. 15mph down road, then shut off A/C seeing ~400degrees. what's surprising egt 1 showing ~300 degrees after 5 minutes. I wanted to wait longer to see if that was idle norm, but I was over my 2 hr limit being out with my ankle, and swelling pretty painful.

I'm going to make a chart and report my observations. In fact, going to start a thread later in 4th Gen to review, report, and compare observations and features. It won't be for Aug -Sep before I'm able to tap the exhaust manifold with my EGT gauge. Then I can actually view both at same type.

Anyway, all cool beans.

Friends,
My wife let me off the leash to drive around 30 miles to Buckees to get sandwiches. While she was inside, Me and the dogs waited in the truck with the A/C. EGT 1 showed 475° when we parked. 20 minutes later, EGT 1 showed 273°. I suspect slow temp drop attributable to having A/C on and outside temp was 91°. I'm guessing there was 373° to 425° in the exhaust manifold. I assume a C&C would read close to a p/u.

Any comments, opinions welcome.

Cheers, Ron
