Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Turbo elbow larger?

Not having installed the 4" exhaust system on my truck (bought it this way), I don't know what size the turbo elbow is inside, but I know the stock system was smaller (3 or 3 1/2"?). Is it advantageous to enlarge the turbo elbow for a 4" system? If so, how - is there a replacement, or can it be ported? Thanks?

Banks makes a 4" replacement for $300. They call it their Power Elbow.



I've asked the question earlier, if its worth it, and didn't get any responses, so I don't think too many people have replaced the stock one.

I'm using a Banks Brake which has the same shape as their Power Elbow. It's conical cross section should allow for a smoother transition to the 4" down pipe. Both products also have extra relief for the gasses exiting from the waste gate. I'm sure both products allow a slightly better flow out of the turbine housing but I don't think one would be able to measure any significance difference in power. A slight reduction in egt's is likely the biggest benefit.

IMO the banks elbow is an absolute waste of good money. $300 could be much better spent on finding performance for your truck.



The 3" elbow is fine for the amount of usable HP an HX35 can safely produce.

I agree. $300 for a part that is worth no more than about $50 because it says "Banks". I personally wouldn't buy anything with his name on it... period.

I would call it worthless for the capabilities of the stock turbo.

I bought mine for $265. the transition is different in the elbow but still starts off at 3" then to 4". If I would have known better I could of use the money for something else. leave the stock one on and let the transition be in the down pipe its much cheaper. I have not yet installed mine so if anybody wants to buy it I am open to sell it for the same price.

I'm gonna put on my flame suit & stick up for Banks here. :-{} I agree $300 is a high price but I don't think any vendor could profitably market a quality casting for a whole lot less. I bought my Banks Brake from a vendor who sold way under retail, but he's not in business any longer. Possibly he got himself in trouble for those low prices. The brake is of excellent quality & well worth the price. One good look & it's obvious it's going to flow a little better than the competition. I've had 2 years of flawless service from it.



No, I wouldn't invest in the Power Elbow, but if one wants a turbo mounted brake, well Banks makes a good one.

You can take your suit off. I don't disagree that Banks products work. And I completely agree that they couldn't make a whole lot of profit at a much lower price. IMO though they are considerably overpriced and overrated.

I'm on your side about the brake though, you definitely get what you pay for there.

I installed my boost elbow it actuall increased my boost pressure 3psi there is a slight difference in egt lower that is. it seems to actually work better than stock.
