Hey guys

I've got a 93 and wanted to put an exhaust brake on it, but I also wanted to upgrade my turbo. I was thinking of putting an hx35,16cm (I saw some used ones on the classifieds) and an exhaust brake off a 94-->97. Will this setup fit on my truck, I realise that I might have to "modify" the firewall a bit but thats O. K. cause I don't have to sit there. :D

I've got an HX35 with a 12cm, and an exhaust brake that came off a 96 or 97. Everything will bolt up, but you will probably have to modify the downpipe. I built my 4 in exhaust, at the same time that I put on the BD exhaust brake, so it all worked out fine for me. If you are not changing exhaust, you will probably have to shift it towards the rear of the vehicle.

ARedetzke... ..... I'll soon be changing out my 16cm on my hx35 to a 12cm wastegated and I have a pacbrake to install if it will fit. I plan on cutting the downpipe 1 1/4-1 1/2". Are you using the factory downpipe with your 4" system or did you fabricate your own? Also, any Idea how close to the firewall the cut downpipe gets with the 12cm/exhaust brake combo? Oh yah, and how do you like the 12cm???? TIA K2

Thanks for the info, glad to here it's so easy. Does anybody know if there is any difference between the HX35 out of a 97 and one out of a 01, or are all the HX35's the same. (I only want to do this once)

Hey Slim, there are some differences in Hx35's, but they basically all "bolt up". The 94-98. 5's have the wastegate actuator mounted on the turbine housing, whereas the 99-2002's have it mounted on the compressor housing. This is of concern only if you plan on running a wastegated housing, such as the 12cm. Also, somewhere around this time, the wastegate cover plate on the turbine housing was changed from a stubby ring/ v-band outlet that a 60 degree exhaust elbow attaches to ( this is what the exhaust brake replaces), to an integral coverplate/elbow. The later style exhaust brakes replace this part. I was lucky enough to pick up a 2001 HX35/12 in our classifieds for $200 :) GOOD LUCK!... ... ... . Kenny

Valve springs

sounds to me like the setup you are planning will work fine. The only other thing I can think of is you should go to 60# exhaust springs so you can set the brake up for maximum retarding.

I fabbed up my own downpipe too, so I'm not sure how much chopping you'll have to do on the stock dp, but it will probably be really close to the firewall. And if you're going from a H1C to an HX 35, you'll like it. Some say the 12 cm chokes you down on the top end, but I haven't had any problems with EGTs so I don't worry about it. Spool up is also a lot quicker than my H1 with the 14 cm. Be sure to take the silencer ring out, they sound a LOT better.
