Turbo Failure

I have a 3500 6. 7l auto 4x4 with about 2700 miles on it. Last weekend the CEL came on. I cycled the ignition and codes P061A and P2262 pop up (Level 2 Torque Performance & Turbo Boost not detected). Took it to the dealer, they said it was a turbo changer failure. It has been at the dealer for over a week now because the turbos are on back order. I can't get my dealer to tell me anything. Is turbo failure a common problem on these 6. 7Ls? Has anyone else had this problem or know what is causing the turbo failures? Does anyone know if Cummins or DC has addressed the problem?

Turbos are super highly stressed components with heat, pressure, RPM, oil and other factors taking their tolls. This new unit adds variable vanes and exhaust braking to the mix all in a motor designed with a 300K mile duty cycle.

More than likely the actuator, not the turbo, but I do not believe the actuators are serviced Separately yet.

Good friend of mine has a new 6. 7 68re and his CEL came on. Told needed a turbo. He drove his until turbo came in. Said it drove and towed and ran just fine with only the cel light as a indicator.

I'm only a lowly 2nd genner, but I would have to think that if there really was no boost or a substantial absence of boost, the truck would run like a dog. Was there any noticeable decrease in performance or seeming lack of power?

I had the rev B flash done today which i dont think will change anything

mine only put the MIL light on once and it went out

Good luck on the resolution of the P2262 code being thrown. Revision A does not resolve the problem, It still comes up for me every week. Dealer thinks the turbo is being carboned? up by the EGT system not programed properly. So far I think DC does not have a fix on the programming of the system. The diesel tech just got back from school last week and also said the turbos are on backorder but replaceing them hasn't been a fix either. I have a feeling the EGT system is dumping too much of the exhaust back through the turbo setting a code and possibly carboning up the sliding turbo sleeve. I know one thing, I'm getting tired looking at the check engine light and making trips back to the dealer.

they dealer said they can order a Turbo for me on Monday

My exhaust brake was acting up - kind of kicking on and off. After a week in the shop and NO satisfaction from Chrysler, the dealer (out of complete frustration with Chrysler) took a new truck off of the line, removed the turbo and put it in my truck. Problem solved. Of course, three days later the A/C compressor developed a loud thump, and it had to be replaced also. ANYONE still seriously considering purchasing one of these trucks must be smoking dope. Get a leftover 5. 9L or buy used...

Ok I have an update.

I am not the best at describing things I will do my best from memory.

I spoke to the tech from the dealership. He called and spoke to his Chrysler support hotline and here is what they told him. Putting on a new turbo unit most likely will not fix the problem. The cause of the problem is that the actuator gets some soot in there and causes it not to slide the way it needs to. They recommend driving the vehicle hard and using the exhaust brake often to help prevent this. What happens is when the key is cycled on the Turbo slides this actuator and that is when it has been throwing the light on for me? He thinks the fix is going to be in the next flash update where it will cycle this actuator a few times to help clean it out. He said something about we can do it ourselves but there was a few minutes of time delay before it to be should shut down cycled and started back up again with the key to slide the actuator. Yeah that's what I said forget that! They also said the Turbo unit has a 4500. 00 Retail price and there was -147 or so yesterday and today there was -140 or so. I guess they are getting seven or so out at a time who knows. They did not know when the next flash will be available but it's coming!

I'm quite satisfied with my '01, so I might be talking out of turn here, but sounds like a sensor/computer problem rather than the actual hardware. Just like a bad MAP, O2 or ABS sensor can throw a code even when nothing else is wrong. Problem is all the damn computers in modern day vehicles. As much as I love my truck and will always sing its praises, the 1970 Chyrsler Newport I use to own NEVER threw a computer code at me. It just started and ran. No computers, no drama. Give me a 4bbl carb and 383 cubes any day! Good luck guys.

Just to post an update the Turbo came in to the dealership I think it took less than one week for it to come in so they are not hard to get at this time

Let us know if this fixes the problem, I bought a 6. 7 about 10 days ago, fingers crossed it doesn't have the turbo issues that plagued Ferd with the 6. 0.



I still have my 06 Dually with the 5. 9 and the 97 12V though.....

They think the new flash that is being made should cycle the actuator a few times when the key is turned on to prevent the carbon build up.

my light has not come on all week I may wait for the flash and let them hold the turbo there if needed. they also are going to replace my rear leather seats that tore in the same place on each side above the recline handle with lesss than 3000 miles on it

Yes I am very careful what fuel I put in the truck

Actually since I have had it I have not seen any pumps that have lsd

they all have the ulsd stickers on them. I do keep away from the no name stations. alot of my driving is in stop and go traffic. and short trips so I can assume that the regen does not finish often. I pan to haul 9-10k next weekend through the mountains i hope that clears it all out. I do run the exhaust brake often as well

well guys reading this post, i think it is only a problem with that sliding portion of the turbo, we have had some recent vehicles in the shop with turbo faults, and it seem to be that the turbo electronic acutators were going out of calibration somehow, i dont know all the facts, just trying to keep up on what i hear and see in the shop. hope this isnt going to happen to the 6. 7l's witht he new electronic vgt actuators.

Thanks to everyone for all of their posts. I am new to owning a Diesel truck and find the info on these sites invaluable.



I have a 6. 7L motor on my truck. Just hit 3100 miles and the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) came on. I checked the codes using the ignition trick (learned from TDR site). It came up with a P2262. I must say that I don't hear the turbo spooling up as much as I did before the light came on. Has anyone had a definite resolution to this issue? I will be taking my truck in first thing Friday morning to get it checked out.
