I'll be taking off my turbo to drill a hole for the thermocouple, and was wondering if there is a gasket between the two or not. If so should I replace it when I do the deed?

thanks

Gasket...

Just installed the very same thermocouple last week... no problems drilling, or reinstalling. OBTY there was no gasket. Have fun :)

Haven't had any reason to pull the turbo off the "03, but I always use a new gasket when installing a turbo. They come with the gasket from Holset, along with the drain back tube gasket.

BTW, there is no problem drilling and tapping with the turbo in place. Use a shop vac while drilling and then put some grease on the tap and clean it several times during the operation. Any fragments left will blow right though the turbine wheel.

The gasket part number is 3919369 from Cummins. I too have done it several times without removing the turbo but it is better to take a little longer to remove it and be safe.

Is that the correct part number for the 03?

That is the single volute gasket used on all the HY35 Turbo Chargers. The HX uses a gasket with a partition in the middle.

Hehe, is that a yes or a no? LOL Don't know which turbo I have.

Cummins gasket 3901356 has the divider. Drill from the side just behind where #3 goes into the "log". There is a spot where it is easy to put your drill to the side of the manifold after removing the air intake hose. Almost all chips will fall away onto the terry cloth towel you place under the manifold to catch the chips. use a pencil magnet to search in the mfd for any more chips after drilling. Put grease on the tap, and there won't be many from it inside either.
