Well, I got the new 16 housing put in today. During the change, I found a problem with the turbo bearings. There was not any play in the shaft nor were the bearings rough, just seemed to be tight. I had another center shaft and wheel unit and found that it turned much easier than the one in the truck so I decided to change the whole thing. Good thing, cause I never did get the old housing broke loose. Had the wife hold the turbo while I beat on it for about an hour. This was after soaking with penetrating oil all night. Glad I have a good wife who helps me out sometimes. (not always but most of the time)
After swapping the air side housing onto the newer shaft unit and putting the new 16 housing on, got the unit put back into the truck. Took it for a ride and --WOW
. What a difference. Only picked up 1-2 pounds boost but it sure gets there fast! My 0-60 time before was about 13 seconds, now is about 10 seconds. Really accelerates hard. I feel the old turbo was taking a long time to get up to speed because it was tight. The old one stopped as soon as I spun it by hand where the one I put in would spin for 3 or 4 revolutions.
You guys might want to spin the impeller the next time you have the inlet hose off. You may find a problem like I did.
