I recently arrived home from a 3 week 6000 mile trip pulling our fifth wheel and noticed that the compressor side of the turbo housing is now a toasted brown color where it was silver before leaving on the trip. Is this normal and nothing to worry about? I have installed Rip's 4" exhaust w/muffler, A BHAF with no sheild, and an Edge EZ. I started with the EZ on the highest fueling level and about 1000 miles into the trip switched it to the lowest fueling level to try and keep the EGT numbers a little lower while towing through the hills of Montana. Any info would be great.

You didn't fill in your signiture. What year truck, auto or stick, gear ratio? On my 2001 check my sig for mods, my hy35 turbo was at it's limit & was brown in color from getting hot. Rip put a pdr hx35 hybred on my truck a couple of weeks ago. It should move that hot air out. We'll see next month when we hook up to the 5vr & take off for the nw nationals.

Mine has had a yellow tint to it since I can remember... pulling a heavy fiver over hill and dale is defiantely putting some heat through the turbo. I think I read here somewhere that the turbos have a factory clearcoat type finish on them. The heat is making it discolor... Thats about the extent of my knowledge on the subject..... I do know a bigger turbo is in my future plans... generating way to much heat for this little ol' HY to handle.

If you use the truck for anything other than mall cruising (i. e. , if you work it like it was intended to be), the coating on the compressor housing will turn amber. No big deal... . my truck has spent 90% of its life pulling 5th wheels, and the compressor housing has been amber since about 2000 miles.

Mine too

Mine has been brown since it was 4 days old. Bought my 3500 on Saturday in Wasons Corner, MD, installed 5th wheel hitch and a few other accesseries that night and Sunday. Hitched her up to our 17K lb 5th wheel w/ 46 miles on the clock. Toasted it real nice running up to Columbus for TDR Nationals in August 2002.

Yep, bought my '01 with 10,000 miles on it in '02 and the truck had never been towed with and pampered. The manifold was barely discolored at all... the first few trips towing at 19,500 GCVW changed that quickly... . it's be a very dark color ever since.

Thanks for the info it was just as suspected, but better off certain. Will work on the signature and get that squared away.
