Any of you folks remove that ring inside the turbo housing that DC demands Cummins or Holset (Im not sure which one) put on there to keep the whistle down? Thinking about trying it out. Saw an article about it here. .

"A silencer ring is a metal baffle placed into the turbocharger inlet to reduce whistle from the turbocharger. It is installed in Ram truck engines at the request of Chrysler. The silencer ring has no effect on engine output, EGT, or boost levels.

Removal: Remove the flex hose from the front of the turbo that goes to the breather. Just inside the turbo, you will see a snap ring that looks like a piston ring(charcoal color), very gently with a small flat blade screw driver, lift one end of the snap ring out of the groove, then continue to work around the snap ring, lifting it out of the groove. When the snap ring has been removed, you can easily remove the silence ring. R&R Instructions from Holset: Inletnew.pdf "

silencer ring

Yup, that ring disappeared just like the instructions say. not too difficult, and the turbo sounds great now:D

Having a problem getting that retaining ring out. . it won't budge. Also my impeller on the turbo is oil free but it has black soot on the blades. Is this Normal?

You'll hear a difference-- not a big one. If you want a bigger difference , get a BHAF or a low restriction filter. [some have reported more dirt gets through some brands of filters] If you want to know how this sounds , take the air filter out and run it a short distance[ as long as the area you live in is not the dust bowl]. Some guys report a good sound with other low restriction air filters , but the stock filter won't cause warranty problems. Not intended as an opinion-- you decide what you want to do.

I have the silencer ring out with K & N and holes drilled in the box(below the filter) and it sounds great. Have done it for numerous people they all love it.
