in the middle of installing my new BD Super B and ran out of room. truck must be running tomorrow for work
turbo installed, went to put on OEM turn down cast iron pipe, no room! pipe hits firewall and transmission dipstick before lining up.
Where I have gone wrong?
Thanks
Kyle

Well IF I read things right BD sent me a 2nd gen turbo, its part # is 174430 (that what it shows on the turbo) with a 3rd gen install kit manual and parts. I looked at the online pictures of both turbos and the one I have, its exhaust housing is much longer than the one I am suppose to have. So the part number I was suppose to have was 1045230, can anyone confirm this?
thanks
Kyle

Sorry to catch this late. You are kind of screwed and either you don't use the truck today, or put the original back on.

I recommend calling the shop where you bought it and confirm.

The new turbo came directly from BD. As for putting the old one back on, its not an option its done, see pix. Now I am losing cash because the truck will not be on the road, had a run to Jacksonville FL (empty) to pickup a car so it would have given the new turbo about 300 miles for a easy break in . then up to KY to drop the car off and pickup a small tractor and come home. I don't normally do that but a neighbor asked, he traded his dads car for a tractor and was trying to save some cash on shipping.
I hope BD doesn't leave me hanging, it took 5 days shipping to get this turbo and I am out a days work and $600 in cash.

What does the compressor discharge look like?

Did you buy it directly from BD? I have been hearing more than a few bad things out of their lane lately.

discharge looks the same, I guess I will need to clean the intercooler too. New turbo will not be here until Wednesday so I have time. BD is taking care of the issue, the turbo came directly from them. a Super B will not fit, I will use a Super B "special". as for the old turbo I am ebaying it off.

What do you mean a super B will not fit? The super B has been, and still is, advertised to fit all 5. 9's from 94-07.

A super B special and a super B are two different turbos, and with how it sounds like you use your truck you WILL NOT like a super B special.

If it has a 90° compressor discharge on it then it's a 3rd gen housing, so did it end up with a 2nd gen turbine?

That question I would like to know the answer to also, I had the turbo bolted in and there was no room for the exhaust elbow, there was no room between the firewall and the back of the turbo. If I took off the adapter the elbow will line up leaving about 1/2 to the firewall. BD says there as some differences in trucks and he has seen this before, I not sure if I believe that but do I have a choice?
As for the Super B special, whats wrong with it? Why is it going to be a problem for me? H

The special is a much larger turbo, and will not be a very good towing turbo for low/mid rpm use.

Looks like the 3rd gen adapter is too long, I doubt there is that much difference in trucks.

Not sure either way but there is a 3 inch difference between the length of the exhaust housing of the OEM turbo and the Super B.
Also the reviews for the special seem to be really good on this web site

When even BD does not reccommend it for a towing turbo, how valid are the reviews? If your looking for more power and cooling in the top end it meets the needs but it is not good at low and mid range. It doesn't surge because it just doesn't light.

A Special is a 64\71\14 turbo. Even with extended tip technology it leaves a bit to be desired and lower rpms and pressure. The Super B is a good upgrade for a 2nd gen but it is small for a 3rd gen that has been turned up. Better towing but not better than an HE351CW. With a manual trans the special might be OK but with an auto I think you may find it lacking.

For towing the II 62\12 is a better choice even for more $$. Good luck with it and BD.

I used to have alot of faith in BD, not so much currently...

I agree, it will be a sucky turbo for towing.

They gave you the wrong Super B, the turbine discharge on the one they sent you is too long. Here is what the correct one should look like.

Thanks JJ Page for the photo, just what I wanted to see, any chance you could get me some measurements on the exhaust housing like from the clamp to the back of the housing?
Thanks
Kyle

Was difficult to get an exact measurement because my tape end was wider than the deepest part of the groove in the back of the exhaust housing. As close as I can tell it is 2 1/8" from the back of the housing to the front of the v-clamp.

It's possible they are the same, but your's certainly looks longer in the pic.

Got a killer B installed, it was a direct bolt in unlike the Super B. For now testing the Killer B, spools quick but boost levels low according to my Bully Dog. Installing a mechanical boost gauge tomorrow

The boost will be a little lower than the HE341 (at cruise, mid power) due to the increase flow on the turbine side reducing the restriction thru the motor.
