they work, but if your truck is hot like a lot of hot rod diesels, it'll actually hurt matters by holding in all that heat and fatiguing the manifold and turbine housing leading to cracks (sooner than they will occur without the wrap)

It seem like very few people in our clas of rucks do it but it seems like quite a few over the road trucks do it. A good friend is an owner operator and he hasz done it and swears by it. I haven't had time to even consider doing it yet.

for a truck that only sees 1100-1200* EGT, it'll do great... for something that sees 1400-1600, it'll fatigue the iron over time.

my buddy built a twin turbo setup a while back on his SBF, wrapped the mild steel headers w/ header wrap. within a couple months, cracks everywhere! he put the exact same headers back in there w/ no wrap. they held up for years after that, zero cracking issues.

We tested one brand of these "turbo diapers" at work, and saw no measureable benefit. (I work for Oak Ridge National Lab's National Transportation Research Center)

Did you happen to test the maximum outer pad surface temperature?

I am thinking about buying or making one do to closeness to my cowl wiring.

What is the theory with wrapping the turbo? I thought you'd want to dissipate the heat, not hold it in.

No, not specifically; however, the product we tested was of a heat-reflecting aluminized, thick, quilted material, and you could literally touch the blanket after a hard run without getting burnt. For your purpose, it may work well. As far as increasing efficiency from improved thermal expansion through the turbo, I don't think you'll see much. --Eric

Yeah Ok thanks. I am currently using a 1 inch thick small scrap CerWool lagging pad it works very well but it looks like hell.
