Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) turbo/intercooler line blew off (long)

last friday I had an embarrassing/scary thing happen. I was pulling the 5th wheel over the pass for the weekend. Everything was great, I followed a ford for a long time and was driving very patiently. Then I finally got my opportunity to pass and started to do so. Immediately after making the pass (And makiing it look easy) I lost all power and made a scramble for the shoulder!!!



I got out and looked but saw nothing. Half expected to see the transmission fluid flowing. It all happened so fast I did not realize the boost gauge went to zip. So I decided to scoot ahead and see what happened. Immediately realized I had no boost



I had no idea what had happened. So I put the wife and kids in the trailer and started scratching my head.



It didn't take long to find the Big (Approx 3") rubber boot between the turbo and intercooler had slipped off. I replaced it and proceeded, it blew off again. So I replaced it and strongarm torqued it and it seemed to hold although I had no more long pulls after that.



I read in the archives that removing the hose, spraying it with hairspray and replacing will cure the problem. Is there any other better solutions?



I was smiling passing the Ford, but he had the last laugh I'm Sure!!

If the mating surfaces are clean hairspray works great especially the cheap stuff. Make sure to get it together before the spray dries. The clamps need to be much tighter than most folks would do by feel alone, suggest you use a torque wrench at least once to get a feel for 70 inch/lbs.

I went through that early on with my truck until I flipped the metal pipe between the turbo and the intercooler 180 degrees. That and torqing the clamps did it. My hoses were starting to get pretty ugly so about two months ago, I called Piers and ordered a set with clamps from him.



The hoses while pricey are heavy duty especially compared to OEM. They are longer where OEM just barely give enough to clamp onto. They are not easy to install either. I ended up lubricating mine, then lined up and marked the parts. I then cleaned the lube, put them back in and am good to go.



Wait, there is more. I replaced the longer pipe on the drivers side with a piece of stainless tubing, no ridges. It stays together just fine and looks good after I put it on a lathe and polished it.
