Is it realistic to think that the use of an exhaust brake could increase EGT's? I have a friend with a 2002 Ford Diesel with a Banks brake who recently cooked his turbocharger. He claims that the incresed fueling from his six gun set up and the engagement of the brake when descending caused the meltdown of the turbo. He thinks my pac brake will ultimately raise the EGT's of a regular descent by restricting airflow and that could possibly damage the turbo. As the engagement of the brake coincides with the release of the throttle, I am not convinced, but would be interested to hear if this is even a reasonable possibilty-Anyone care to share their thougts?

there is no way it should do any damage, As you said your off the fueling when the brake is engaged so the egts should be fine. Lets face it its a power joke so its going to breake things

That's my take on it too. All Ford bashing aside he is a great guy who drives with a lead foot and just happened to have a lapse in judgemnt when purchasing his vehicle.

His leadfoot probably cooked the turbo going up the hill and he didn't notice it until he cleared the summit and started downhill. By the time he noticed, he had the exhaust brake on and was just cruising downhill.

I definatly dont mean to sound ignorant here or will I take either side of the fence @ this time, but how could you melt a decent turbo pulling up a steep grade ? I mean--it's only going to produce x amount of boost etc... I could see a problem if it wasn't cooled after the pull, but if he went down the other side that should have taken care of that. I Dunno---Proflow

I'm wondering if his exhaust brake was partially engaged, ie the flapper valve was restricting airflow & let the turbo get too hot climbing the grade? If he cooked the turbo it probably didn't do the engine a lot of good either.
