A buddy of mine has a 95 12 valve with a TST #6 plate, BHAF, and a slipping clutch... the question asked to me was why his turbo did not sound as good as mine. I have a 98 12 valve with #6 plate, BHAF, and 4" stainless exhaust from turbo on back with no muffler, nor resonator. When my turbo blows off it has a very distinctive whine and whir, whereas his is quite quiet still. In fact you can hear the clutch plate chattering over the turbo noise. He has heard that there is a silencing ring inside the turbo housing right at the air tube and he has removed that (since mine did not have it either) hoping he would get a little more sound out of it. What else could be present, or missing, to make the turbo not blow off as loud? Our last guess is his restrictive exhaust is muffling the blow off sound. Any ideas?

Muffler wont have much effect on sound, a more restrictive exhaust can help spool-up, depending on fueling. a small turbo wont be a problem for a stock ex.

Definetly take out the silencer ring, very easy with a flat screwdriver and some patience. I would also venture to guess he still has the stock airbox. The plastic clamshell doesnt help much for air movement or turbo sound. I highly recommend getting a BHAF, I got mine thru Fleetguard, pn AH19037. Take out airbox, shield 3 airbox studs with a piece of 1x3 wood or rubber tubing, slap a piece of pipe insulation on yer ac lines, and just slip the air hose over the horn of the BHAF. I also installed a turbo heat shield from fostertruck.com, helps with the heat. Got a prefilter from outerwears.com, that helps with the rain and big pieces of crud.

might want to check the turbo for play while yer messin in there.

good luck

He's already running a BHAF setup and, from what I can tell, has similar running gear compared to mine minus the exhaust.
