I thought I had a boost leak because I could hear air hissing at high throttle and load. Checked all hoses and clamps but could not find anything wrong so I took off the air cleaner and inspected the turbo shaft. My question is how much play should their be in the bearing when the unit is cool? Mine has little or no play going in and out but quite alot going up or down. So much that if you hold it to one side it doesn't want to turn easilly. The bearing are quiet and smooth and spin freely. Is this where I am hearing the air hiss as the impeller moves around?

I am taking a long trip next month towing my trailer and can't afford havibg a turbo go. Any comments or experiences will be appreciated.

I really am not trying to sound like a jerk, and I sincerely apologize if this sounds like an insulting question or suggestion, but...

I take it this sound just began very recently. I don't see what air filter type you have on the truck in your sig, but if you just recently went from the factory air box to one of the very full flowing air filtration systems, such as a BHAF, K&N or AFE cone type filters, then it could very well be just the turbo sucking in all the air which you never heard with the stock air box. As soon as I went to the K&N 0880 filter a couple years ago, wow, was I surprised at how loud the turbo whistles/screams/sounds now. Especially under good acceleration.

Ispears, as far as the bearing clearences when in the stopped mode I dont know what is allowed but I can tell you that that tolerence will be taken up by the oil flow when the turbo in spinning.

On the whisstle sound one way to check for boost leaks is to monitor your boost pressure and if you are missing some pressure than you prolly have a boost leak and the most logical place for the leak is on the rubber boot between the compressor and the intercooler, that is where I had my first leak and the boot had slipped from under the clamp, it was in a spot where you could only go by feel and couldnot see it so check it again.

Cheers, Kevin

Sorry for not giving all the information. I have had a K/N filter on the stock air box for two years and 24000 miles. Sure the noise changed with the filter but this is alot more noticable than 3 months ago. The motor is stock and I have no guages as yet to check for possible leaks. I changed to AMSOIl HD 5w-30 7000 miles ago and it was after that that I started to notice the louder hiss.

Thanks for any and all input.
