I recently had my CTD at the dealer to replace a faulty wastegate actuator. The part was replaced, and all was well for a week or so, until I started smelling an oily burning smell. When I raised the hood, I could see smoke coming off the turbo. The connector on the oil line that feeds oil to the turbo is leaking from the top where the hard pipe passes through the fitting. At idle, it's a slow ooze, but I suspect when I'm driving it leaks faster. I removed the fitting at the turbo and can see no visible flaw or damage, reinstalled it and tightened it up, but it still leaks. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to get it to stop leaking? Just to be safe, I've already ordered a new hose from Cummins, which should arrive in the next day or so. Is there supposed to be some kind of washer or gasket between the flare and the connector to prevent such a leak? Any and all help will be much appreciated.
 
It needs to be fairly tight.



If you remove the line from the turbo end, the bushing /"bolt with its head cut off" is the female thread portion, inside look for a copper sealing/compression washer. If they removed the turbo from the engine to change the wastegate this might have fallen out.



You might also tighten the female bushing aforementioned and then check for the "wave" sealing washer (dome side up) then tighten the line down again.



They usually reseal ok, but I had one that gave me fits once on a 98 12v. I think it was severely overtightened during assy and the washer we've discussed was cut pretty bad.



If the washer is missing, I think we've located the seep.



Does make a mess eh?

Many thanks, I'll give your suggestions a try. I'm still waiting for the UPS truck to arrive here with the replacement parts, but while I wait, I'll try to see if that washer is missing. Here's hoping it will be a simple fix.



And yes, it is messy! Can't believe how a little seep ends up coating everything with oil.

Why not change it to Aero-Quip braided pressure line?. It may be a little more costly at first but parts will be easier to come by if needed. Most speed shops or shop which assemble high pressure hydraulic lines can make it for you if its taken in and shown to them.



Most times the dealership(can't believe I said that)will either over torque and crack the line or under torque and not tighten it all the way. Hope you straighten it out. PM me if you need a hand..... Andy
 
Turbo Oil Line

I just bought a oil feed line from the local dodge dealership and the fitting that screws into the top of the turbo and it cost me $40. 00, and that cured my leaking problem. Oo.
 
Well, the new oil line arrived, I installed it and no leaks. Cost $28 and change from Cummins. And the washer was in the female plug, so that wasn't the problem. I suspect the old line just wouldn't seal any more. Anyway, sure nice not to have oil going everywhere and stinking things up. Thanks to all for your help and suggestions.

Do you have a part # for this oil feed line? The ones im seeing are $120+

It is reasonable that the price would have gone up considerably since 2003 but to make sure PM me the trucks full vin or the 8 digit engine serial # so we can look it up in Cummins...
 
OK, here is the illustration and parts list...tell me what items and I will price them out for you...if you do need the pressure (oil feed) line then you should purchase the o-rings at least. Me, I would purchase both fittings with o-rings already on them just to be safe.

So I would suggest....

(1) of 3935821 (Item # 8) Should sell for around $46.00 or so.
(2) of 3922789 (Consists of items 4, 5 and 6) Should sell for $8.00 each or so..

A longs ways from $120.00 at least.........

Thanks so much for all of the part numbers and information about my truck.:-laf I'm at work, on my lunch break i just went out to verify that the oil pooling on the fitting connected to the oil filter housing was in fact coming out of the line. And so far it looks like it is not. The whole side of the block is covered in oil, theres even some splashed on the side of the intake boot. It pools on top of the oil filter as well. I'm wondering if it is the oil filter housing spitting oil and wind/bumps is throwing it everywhere. I need to clean everything up really good and find out exactly where it's coming from. I just bought the truck this weekend. :confused:
 
Is that line wet??? They will spray a lot even with a pin hole. Carries full engine oil pressure.

You are correct, clean it up with Brake Kleen or something similar first.....see if you can pin it down before you spend money...
 
No sir the line is not wet. Anything off of the top of your head that could throw oil all the way up there? Like i said i'm thinking oil filter/intercooler housing now.
