Crew Cab Dually Conversion???

4 cylinder Cummins?

Can someone tell me what size the exhaust housing is on a 4bt. It's one of the ones out of a Frito Lay truck. 105 HP. I've turned it up just a bit, and I am getting ready to add an intercooler. I want to get a little better response and power. I've been reading about how well the 6's respond to a 16 or a 14, I was hoping the same principle would work on the 4. EGT is not a problem. Basically no load on the engine. Only in a 3500 pound Bronco. I can barely get the temps up to 1000 before it is against the governor then it cools way down.

I think the one one my truck was either a 16 or 18. I put a 12 on it and it was a nice improvement.

turn the fuel screw in a turn and the high idle out a turn or two and it will respond nicely.

I guy named sclements on this board put on a 12cm housing and turned the pump up a little and his 4BT screams. I think that the 4BT has a 14cm housing or a 16cm. I know it's not bigger. I think that if you used a 12cm housing, that you would be just fine. Use a 3" exhaust off the turbo at least, so that the engine won't fry itself.

Thanks guys

Now on to my next question, Where do I get one and what do I ask for? Not trying to sound stupid or anything, I just really don't know. The Cummins dealer around here doesn't really help much either. As long as I show up with part numbers for what I want, they are fine, but if I need help researching something they seem irritated. I can't complain too much, they did give me a valve cover.

:D

BJM,

You can also use an HY35W which are going cheap. It's 8 cm and as such will spool up in lower rpms like you will want. These were on some of the 6bt automatics. Bombers who wanted to go beyong the 30 psi choke point of the HY35W pulled them off and don't want them. I personaly think they're perfect for the 4BT.

ok, im stupid. say i buy a hx35, or is it a hy35?. it bolts up and i dont need anymore adjustments? when it "spools up faster" that should give me faster acceleration?

or should i add a intercooler and egt guage first?

Intercooling will improve performance and will reduce engine temps. You definatly want an EGT gauge. HY35s have a 9cm exhust housing on them so they will spool the fastest. Lots of people get rid of the HY35 9cm because they build too much back pressure for a 6cyl. I would agree that would be a good turbo for a 4BT and would be the cheapest. If you are not sure what turbo you are looking at the housing usually has 12cm or 9cm etc cast into it on the outside.

Can someone tell me if the wastegate actuator on a HY35 will clear on my 4BT? I looked at a 2002 truck with HY35 and notice that the exhaust manifold flange where the turbo bolts up is at an angle to the engine, where the 4BT flange is straight down. Looks like it would be a close fit. Any suggestions on how to make it fit if it doesn't fit in the stock configuration?

Thanks

HY35W clearance

My HY35W and wastegate will clear but there was no wastegate mounts on my turbo. I have to make those myself. I have an exhaust manifild that has a boltup flange tilted slightly back toward the firewall. many of the 4BT's do not. Look at your oil cooler/filter housing too. I had to cut off my oil filter spin-on flange to clear the HY35W ass'y which is about 2-3 inches longer on the 4" intake than the H1C. I went remote with oil filter. I had to drill some holes in turbo's flange slightly larger too.
