Which turbo should i use?

I have a 97 Cummins going into a 93 Chevy. The motor is rebuilt(balanced) with a piers cam, 370 pistons and injectors, head studs & o-ring. The pump was rebuilt local with timing reset & other internal mods. I am looking for 400-450 RWHP. The transmission is a NV5600 with a south bend clutch.

It will be towing and a daily driver.

Anyone try this one? http://www.powermaxturbo.com/

Also will these injectors due, or should i look for others?

HX40 is perfect for 400-450 HP and towing. Is this a 180 HP pump or 215? Depending on what pump it is and what plate you use you will probably have more HP than you think with a 215 pump. You should have over 500 HP with a 215 truck with a 0 plate and the rest of your mods, in that case I'd go with a Killer B2 64/14 from HTT.

You may want to also consider a small set of twins since it's towing.

zstroken, he mentioned all 3 answers to your questions in the original post. Yes he's gonna tow, it's gonna be a daily driver, and 400-450 RWHP.

My bad, i went back and looked to see if it was an auto or manual, and when I saw that, I stopped reading. Guess I should avoid TDR when I am tired. You can get there with the 370's, depending on what "internal mods were done to the pump. Some trucks really haze with 370's and some don't. I think alot of it depends on your timing. In my set up I have a 62/12 on the 01 and have no heat issue towing and that is with around 375 with the box off. At that level I can tow 10K with no EGT issues. What elevation are you running? Matthug is right the 64/14 would get you right where you need to be with the HP. You could also look at a II sps62/80.

I will be towing up to 16k lbs. It is a 215 pump. Are twins worth the extr*****$? How is the Jammer BB working?

Kevin

We set up lots of trucks in your HP range with the Phat Shaft 62 or Super Phat Shaft 62 turbos. These turbos work great on a 12v (no surging issues), have awesome egt control and great spoolup. Going with a larger turbo is really not warranted and will drive worse. The trick is to match the right size turbo to the application.

What are you doing for a fan clutch and intercooler

I put a 5. 9 in a 93 4x4 Chevy X-CAB, 5 Speed, and cooling is tight. I run a full-time fan, and I'm still running mine with the big 6. 5L intercooler up down front, but to do the job right, I think the Horton fan clutch mount, ;if you can find a fan to match is ideal. I have the DC intercooler, but will have to draw down my AC, and remove the front radiator support mount to get that big animal mounted. Yep, Gonna do that some day.

I would avoid a HX40 at that power level and tow. I can't keep my EGTs down with my setup towing, unlees I don't drive over 55mph. But that also depends on the ambient air temp. If the amb temp is under 50*, not as big of an issue, but, if over 60* and trying to run hard, it won't be enough turbo.

An automatic really makes a difference too. How heavy do you tow? Those injectors and DV's aren't really suited for towing anyway, only twins would keep that cool. A sled puller would probably surge, killer B2 maybe OK.

I plan on running the stock fan and intercooler.

Are the 370 injectors to hot? Others better?

Also How does the HTB2 compare to the Phat shaft?

Kevin

HTB2 and phat shaft are the exact same thing. If you get the super phat shaft it has a larger turbine wheel. IMO not needed unless you go with atleast the 64 and it's really best with the 66mm inducer. I often wonder why HTT doesn't use the larger turbine wheel in their sled pullers like the super phat shaft, I would think it would help with the ever so popular surging problems with the SP66.

At that time, I still had the 370 injectors, and stock timing, but would still probably be an issue still, even with the lower EGTs I have now. The 370s run hotter. Probably wasn't even towing 4k. The 4. 10s and wanting to run 75 didn't help either. More than enough power (probably wasn't much over half throttle), but had to babysit the pyro, til I got out of the TX hill country.

Havent hardly towed with the current setup. Most of my towing is over 10k, but at low speed (farm implements). So EGTs aren't normally an issue. Getting a big G/N flatbed now, though.

I have a HTB2 64/14 to go on. Will see how that works. Trying to avoid twins at the moment, but will probably have a set down the road I'm sure.

From what I heard DDP4's run about the same temps as 370's, DD3's are same power but cooler. But the timing really effects EGT's. What was your timing before you set it to 16? Friend of mine said going from 13. 5 to 16 lowered EGT's by 200 degrees.

The Super Phat Shaft 62/80 has been the best turbo for towing. It will also make very good hp. It will be in Toy Hauler magazine in a month or two. They feel it is the best turbo for towing. They made 584hp at May Madness with the Super Phat Shaft 62/80. They were very impressed and loved it. There has been a lot of data posted here on TDR about the turbo. Stieger posted it so you could find it by doing a search under his name. Thanks
