Before and After

A bigger turbo or turbo's was on the list of things to do to my truck. so my truck made the decision of when to get one for me this weekend. After about a dozen third gear romps through a muddhole the turbo is now making a lot of noise and quit making boost. I havent torn it apart yet but I think the problem is obviouse. Especialy considering I can peg the 30# boost guage in every gear (not granny) and have been subjecting the baby H1C to that for a year now.

I have done some reading on what to use for a turbo or turbo's and have a decent Idea on what to use but would love some input from guys that have been there and done this. My plans were to make a hybrid out of the H1C 60mm and then put a ht3b underneath but I'm thinking that my turbo is junk so wondering what to buy for a top turbo or only turbo. My plans for the truck is a driveable toy, (mud, sand, pulls, dyno, drags) In the next year I will be dumping alot of money into the performance aspect of it and plan to go BIG! I don't care about smoke as long as it is somewhat controlable, but the most important thing to me is response. I would gladdly sacrifice some power for awsome throttle responce (no lag). Some custom injectors and internal pump mods will be coming very soon. so lets hear some opinions, single, twins whose products, prices, everything. Hopefully this will spark some performance disscusion. Sorry for the long post, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think a htb2 62-12 or 14 would be a good choice. PM TDR member ' zstroken '. He is a HTT dealer. Great prices and service and not too far from you, well central Indiana area, shipping wouldn't kill you. Spend the money now for a good 4" turbo, instead of buying a compressor upgrade turbo, then eventually going to a true 4" turbo such as the htb2 line.

thanks Bill, thats kinda what I had in mind, either the HTT 62 or 64/14. I would like to know if that would be enough of a turbo for a single or if not are they usable for a top turbo in a twin setup. I don't think I've heard of that being done. how does your 66 handle your setup and how fast does it spool?

Thanks agian for the reply. Cade

There are a few places building twin setups using a htb2 62-12 for the top turbo. I believe www.powerbypoole.com is one of them. My sp66-14 spools fast but I have a bit more fuel than most 1st gens. I think a 66 would be a little big for a 12mm VE and POD's or any injector for that matter. What injectors do you have? I know of one member glhs that has a htb2 64-14 and he's made good power with it. Do a search with his name and read up on his comments on that turbo.

My new to me truck is gonna get a new turbo, I am looking at a 62-12 or 14 using POD's for now with it. Figure since it's an auto and less loading on the engine the smaller wheel 62 with the smaller housing 12, might work good. With a stick I don't know, probly the 62-14. With that you can upgrade the compressor wheel down the road to a 64, or use it in a twin configuration.

What we need is more 1st gens doing more R&D with bigger turbos. I don't know of too many 1st gens using anything other than a hx35 hybrid. Which we all know ain't gonna get ya over 400rwhp in a 1st gen.

One turbo is a compromise between the two problems. Water injection will help to a degree.

If you want to perform true R&D... ... . install a VT turbo. Best of both worlds there.

Yeah. VG. . whatever. It's the ONLY turbo you can install on an engine to give you low end/high end response, power etc. etc. etc. etc cuz it's a variable size unit that compensates for all the stuff our single cannot.

A turbo is like a torque converter. You can install a different one from OEM, but you'll still have issues to contend with.

Pick the issue(s) you don't want to contend with and buy a turbo that covers them and realize you'll have other issues you can live with.

Cade, when you mentioned all that areas you want your truck to perfrom well in..... (Mud/pulls/dyno /drags )you will have to have an assortment of turbos to install and/or twin turbo package.

Sorry it took so long to reply. Ive been working three hours from home with no computer. We have been working 7 12's. As I said before I hate lag so I think a twin setup will be in the future. Unless I can find somthing cheap for a temp I think I will go with the 62/12. If I can't spool it I will order some custom sticks witch I need to do some reasearch on also. For know I have the stockers but I think the 9mm 1990's are fairly big, they sure let out the smoke. They haze at idel and can blackout 2 lanes of trafic when I want. I am also going to take the pump apart, gsk and afc lever. also bigger banjo fittings, 4 inch exhaust with stacks and a 4 inch intake with bhaf are in the works. As far as the variable turbos go I am new to the turbo game and don't even know where to find an ht3b  so I don't think I am your guy for the R&D :) . Thanks for the replys Bill and Scott

If you have idle haze with the stock sticks, you have problems somewhere- either tips or pump. I have had a few of these trucks, and NONE of them had any idle haze unless they werent up to snuff. You may already have PODsOo. Not likely

We just received turbine parts we have waiting for to make Silver Bullets. If you have not seen or heard of them they have been the hot ticket. Thanks

I would like to hear about the silver bulit, if nothing else for the knowledge. I dont want to spend any more money than I have to though.

As far as there being a problem, my truck out performes everthing I hear about first gens. My fuel screw is almost bottomed (5+ turns in) with no hint of runnaway and it put down 301 HP on the dyno with only small, easy mods. If I have a problem I am glad to have it :-laf

Thanks for the replys,

Cade

Well I ordered a HTT 62/12 from ETR in TN. Good people to deal with so far and got it for $1263 shiped. I'll let you know how it performes when I get time to put it on.

Oh that slippery slope... . another has just started down... . next will be a $900 set of EDM's:cool:... . but I'm sure a clutch will be in order beforehand:(. . not a wannabee 12" clutch :p ~$1000 FUN!

I got a line on a used enterprise dual disk to get everything hooked a little better and then I will be ready for some injectors. I better get to work to hit 400 HP before peru this year. Thanks agian Bill and everyone else for the reply's
