Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Turbo Problems!!!

Well, I just bought a 95 3500 for what I thought was a good price ($3500, but needs some body and other work). I went to take the silencer ring off and noticed I have end play and a very little bit of side-to-side play. Obviously thats bad, but when I rev the engine over 2500, the motor starts to miss bad and bellows blue smoke (unburnt fuel). Could the missing be related to a bad turbo? When I rev my 97 with the hood up, I can hear the turbo whistle, but doing the same to the 95, I can't. If the turbo is bad, how much is a replacement, new or used? Sorry for the long post but I don't know if I should get my money back or not as I owe $500 more when the seller produces a title.

I forgot to mention that the truck has been sitting for about 2 or 3 years and the air filter is partially clogged. I guessing that the fuel filter is in need of a change and there was some old fuel in it as well. Could this be contributing to the problem? Could it be timing or maybe injectors? The truck has 273,xxx miles on it. Thanks again!

first of all, check the compressor wheel, does it spin freely?, you said it has some end play, what are you describing? if the compressor moves in and out then the turbo is likely bad, the blue smoke could have been a number of things, clogged fuel filter, air filter, poor fuel quality, i would change you fuel filter, and when you change the cartridge, fill the can with your preffered diesel fuel treatment, i use the grey power service, the fuel treatment will clean your injectors, and help lube the internals of you fuel pump, if fuel has been sitting in the truck, try to drain the fuel, and get some fresh diesel in the truck, if the truck has that much mileage, check valve lash, check you fuel over flow vavle spring for correct length, timing may be slipped on the motor, but i would suspect that it would show those signs at all rpms and run rough in general. if that is the stock turbo, it could benefit replcement, or rebuild the center cartridge. lots of things to check out.

Well crap you got to make sure the thing has good fuel and some routine maintenance done before going ahead and replacing parts like a turbo!
