New to the diesel ownership. I was woundering if the turbo on the 04. 5 have a waistgate or a bypass valve. I am just learning about the diesel and the turbo and a friend of mine questioned which it had. Thanks.
 
It has a wastegate.

But the 04. 5 has somewhat of a wastegate controller.

This unit opens and closes to allow and prevent wastegate operation.

wastegate is what you have... a wastegate is plumbed into the exhaust side of a turbo setup. it is used to bypass the exhaust drive pressure past the turbine housing.

a bypass valve/blow off valve is plumbed into the intake system on gasoline engine turbo setups and is actuated by intake manifold vacuum to dump boost pressure when the throttle blade closes.

if you get creative you could plumb one into a diesel, or you could get an electronic one like BD sells as the turboguard

Does the waistgate keep the turbo from going in reverse? If not is going in reverse a bad thing. I am told that going in reverse could cause damage to the turbo over long periods of time. Bypass valves are designed to keep gas engines from going in reverse to prevent damage, right?
 
No it does not keep the turbo from going in reverse. The waistgait keeps the turbo from creating too much boost. Boost over a certain level in any given turbo creates heat and raises EGT's to an unsafe level. Going in reverse, what we call turbo bark, is a bad thing indeed. Even once, if severe enough, can damage or destroy the turbo. I can't answer the bypass valve/gasser question.

Too much boost doesn't create High egt's too much fuel not enough boost cause excessive egt's. A blowoff valve keeps the turbo from barking spinning in reverse which is a more of a problem in manual transmission trucks it can be caused by letting off accelerator pedal to quickly when boost pressure's are high. I sell a product called the turboguard by BD it is mounted on the driver's side on the exit pipe coming out of intercooler and it is designed to let out backpressure to prevent turbo bark.
