WHat would it hurt to put a pipe plug into the hole where the boost elbow goes? That would completely disable the wastegate. Or would it let the turbo overspeed? Just curious.

I have the Edge EZ and was wondering if the plug would give me just a hint more boost. I dunno, maybe I'm just nuts, but hey, every little bit helps :D

Hello Gizmo,

Wastegates should Never be disabled, this causes turbos to run way out of there efficiency band and creates a lot of heat which translates in to High EGT.

If you want to raise boost the best way is to adjust the length of the rod shorter a turn or two at a time, but never bottom it out.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies. It was just a thought. I run a boost elbow, but I'll try to adjust the actuator rod, too. I'd like to see closer to 35 - 40 psi. At the moment I can only build about 29-31 psi under load .

There is no need to run that much boost!

21 psi will support 350 hp flywheel.

Running more boost than you need makes unwanted Heat.

Try to find a boost level that will give you a clean tail pipe and keep EGT in check, it will be lower than you think in terms of boost.

Ted,

Is the boost elbow provided with the power edge EZ too restricting for the wastegate? The most I've seen, is about 1200* pulling hills with a heavy load, and about 24 to 25 psi.

Big A

Big A, the Bleed orifice provided with the Power Edge is the same as what we provide in our Camplate kits for the 12 valves, it is the next best way to raise boost since the wastegate is still active, 24-25 lbs boost is still with in the efficiency of your current turbo.

Rattlin, Glad to be back! Been as busy as a One Arm Wallpaper hanger in a wind storm.

How much boost do you want?

Ted, I hope you don't mind me posting your quote here.

Air fuel ratio has all to do with all internal combustion engines, in the case of Diesels, too rich and you have soggy performance, black smoke and High EGT.

Too lean, i. e. more air than you need for proper complete combustion, Lost performance.

Too much boost, or more than you need causes many Deficiencies.

High back pressure, high charge air temps, high egt. etc.

Everything is a balancing act.

Simple test if you have a boost and egt gauge,

Lower boost a little at a time, you will see EGT drop then rise again as you go down, find the point were you have balance for you combo.

I thought it adds to this post Topic.

Ted,

Do you know how to adjust the opening pressure of the wastegate on an HY turbo. Do shorten the rod or lengthen it to get it to open later... ...

What I mean is my waste gate is set at 21 from factory, how do I get it to open later (around 30psi).
