Does any one know of advantages or disadvantages of removing the disk on the inlet side of the turbo? What is it purpose?

It is a silencer ring. just like the name implies, it quietens down the turbo whistle, most folks remove them so that the turbo whistle is louder. I don't think there is any performance gain from it being removed. There is no disadvantage to removing it that i know of, the turbo is just louder.

cummins doesn't use them in non dodge applications so don't worry about it affecting anything performance wise ...

i've got about 2 dozen in the garage from people who wanted louder turbos

they do use them in non-Dodge applications, but there's no real performance difference... removing the ring actually can alleviate some surging/barking

Yes, they do use it in some non-dodge apps but in some not so much... . I have seen the ring in straight truck frieghtliners with the 5. 9 cummins but have not seen them in the militaries Armored Security Vehicle and the 900 series 5 ton trucks... . all those use the 8. 3 L C engine... . with the HX40 which is what is bolted to the turbine housing of my HX35... . What a diffrence! Ha good times! I did notice though when I took the ring out of my dodge that I did get better fuel milage by like 2 mpg and a lot louder turbo and a little less smoke but that is just me! Let us know!

I never noticed any difference in mine but maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention. I ran for a long time without but when I went to driving OTR I put it back in. It sounds fine driving around town but I didn't like the whine all day long through my open air filter while towing or even when dead heading.
