Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Better Turbo??

I want to go with the BD twins but don't have enough money yet. But I need more air now, so I am going to buy a single. I am going to step up to mach 6's when I get the larger turbo. And eventually add a smarty. Right now with my Hx 35/14 cm housing on level 3 sub level 4 on the edge I can spin the tires in first and into second gear. I also see about 35 to 40 psi of boost. I want to be able to spool the new turbo like like the Hx35 spools. Is this possible? I like the power right off the line.

The best turbo for a setup like you are planning is a 62/12 htb2. It spools like the hx35, but runs way cooler egt's. The 62/12 would be a great turbo for a top turbo in a twin setup. I ran one for 2 months & loved it for towing & fun. The 62 super is a good choice too & egt's would run even cooler than the 62. I like the super turbos, but they do come in about 150 rpm later than a htb2. The super turbo does build boost faster from initial spoolup to peak boost though, but you said that you want it to spoolup like a hx35.

With my Smarty on #9 and my TST on #5, I can push the pyro off the charts (max on gauge = 1600F). With this combo, I peg about 37lb boost. I know it's way outside the map of the HY35, so want to go to a 62/12.

What's the gut feel on EGT reduction -- all things equal -- with HTB2?

I hate having to get out of it on the highway to keep things intact internally.

Thanks

Tim

Htb2 62/14

since I have put the htbs 62/14 on the truck with TST on 5 and smarty sw-9 I will hit about 1200 deg, at 40psi I have not yet hit 1400 deg, at 65 to 70 mph I run between 650-700 deg driving. with no smarty and just TST on level 8 or 9 I dont have much heavy smoke. the htbs does great with clearing up the smoke. keep in mind the smarty pending setting will really work your running gear. I had a bad rear u-joint and didnt know and it destroyed my rear yoke from hitting it to hard. I know now with the smarty on I really have to ease the pedal, the power is there, and its a little less smoke. I went through (www.sourceautomotive.biz) for all of my bombs they helped me. hope this helps good luck.

I know that industrail injection made the SPS 64 for second gen trucks with your set up in mind. Give Shane a call 1 800 955 0476

A HTT QD 64 or Pro Street 66 would absolutely love some Mach 6's. I'm currently running a Pro Street with Mach 7. 5's with no problems with EGT at all and I have surely tried many. This single had the same ET on just motor than the twins did - launch wasn't nearly as smooth - but it really makes the power. 64lbs of boost with no trouble and the price is right too.

i wish i could keep my 6's cool with my sled puller 66... ... 1600 in about 4-5 seconds.

i guess the NOS helps a lot on keeping things cool

I can get the gauge on up there but for regular driving it's not that bad. I couldn't ever pull a load at all but that's definitely not what I'm in for. :-laf It's pretty fun driving a single again. There is a world of difference between twins and singles - amazing difference.

The 64 or 66 aren't gonna spool anywhere near a hx35 & right off the line is not in these turbos bloodline. This is why I said super 62 or htb2 & if twins are in the future..... this turbo would be best.

Why did you go back to the single?

So basicially your pretty much into second gear before the turbo kicks in. I do alot of stop and go driving and I don't like to be the last one off the line, if you know what I mean :D .

RConner how do you like the F1. 6's? Let me know if you plan on selling them.

I love them the truck should have come with them. Yes I will sell them when I get larger sticks. The reason I would go with larger sticks is because a larger turbo will spool better and faster, Is this correct??

So what combo do you need to get 500+ hp and spool like a hx35 with a single?

The only turbos that spool as fast as the hx35 is the htb2 62/12. The super 62 is a little slower initial spool, but builds boost faster after it lights. The 500+ range is gonna be a super 62. The egt's would still get up there @ wot though pushing 500+, but would still be manageable via go pedal pressure. :D
