I understand that the 2004 turbo has a 9 cm exhaust housing which is good for emisions but is not that great for effeciency. I am thinking about adding an EZ box and I am thinking it would be a good idea to also upgrade the turbo so I can use all of the additional power without worring about high EGT's. Does someone make a true bolt on replacement turbo that does not require cutting, welding, exhaust pipe replacement, exhaust manifold replacement, ect, ect. I don't need something for monster H. P. just a small upgrade to handle the Edge EZ when towing my horse trailer.

You might look into a turbo from an 04. 5 or 05 truck. It has a 62mm compressor wheel verses the small 56mm that you have now. It will aid in cooling. Same 9cm housing and turbine wheel though.

That is a great question, there must be more of us out there wanting to just efficiently upgrade a little. I don't think the 05 turbo is any better, I think we need to go aftermarket. I am thinking along the exact same lines.

I live at high altitude and I know that alone makes extra demands. Adding even a mild box would likely jepordize my stock turbo and give me high EGT's. I'd love to hear from somebody who has done a mild bomb and how it worked.

How mild?

I have a b104 and it is a great turbo for towing.

62mm compressor wheel are very large exhaust wheel with a 14cm wastegated housing.

Forgot to mention the superb 58mm compressor wheel and larger exhaust wheel and housing.

I run a Super b from bd power. I can tell a big difference from factory. There are turbos out there that will handle more but the superb is reasonably priced compared to some of the others. With that said though you should stay cool enough running just an EZ if you have a filter or intake. I ran that set up about 2 years and never had any problems before i upgraded the turbo.

The B104 is close to straight bolt on, you just have to tweak a couple things.

It seems all turbos on 3rd gens you will need to do a couple little things here or there.

From what I've been hearing and the prices on them, the BD Super B would probably be the best suited for your situation. The B1-04 is a GREAT turbo, but it comes at a price. The SuperB will flow around 40psi and keep you cool up to around 400-425hp.

Has anyone had experience using the Piers modified stock turbo? I see that it is only $400. 00 to have it done.

vaughn mckenzie had one - he liked it. the piers mod is similar to the 2004. 5/5 OEM turbos, as defined above. i have the super b and i really like it. spools near stock with more cooling. with my edge ez and tst stacked my responsiveness is crazy (yet controllable) even with both boxes on their lowest settings! :-laf

Maybe an HTBG from HTT turbo?

Then you can upgrade it later when you really get the bomb bug

It about $1100 I think, and as far as bolt in?

All I did to fit my Sledpuller 66 was rotate the intercooler tube and clock the compressor elbow to clear the shock tower, Pretty much remove and replace (heavy sucker though)

So thats my vote, Htt HTBG, then upgrade later for the $200 to the next size you need :)

Is this 400-425 flywheel H. P. or Rear wheel H. P. ?

i will throw my 2 cents in for the BD super B. i love it. spool up about the same as stock but will maintain 40 psi safely. wakes up the TST box also. this truck is unbelieveable on 6,6. daily drive is on 4,2 with just slight amount of smoke.

only mods were grinding a little off the motor mount and cut about 1-1/2" out of the stock exhaust system.

I also emailed Piers and they said that the modified turbo would handle the Edge EZ but nothing more. I think that is the route that I am going to go as I don't ever plan on doing anything more than a mild box. Does anyone have a 2004 turbo they want to get rid of for a core to send to Piers?
