I've read about turbos leaking oil and the engine running with the diesel shut off. I think that may be happening to me.

Very infrequently, when I start the truck (94) the turbo makes an unusual and loud sound. The truck starts and runs and after about 20 seconds, everything goes to normal. This has occured less than a dozen times in the last several months. The last time, it occurred to me to turn off the ignition, which I did, but the truck kept running. So I killed it by letting the clutch out in 5th.

Some specs on the truck: 94, 80k, 230hp/605ftlbs uprate, not alot of hard pulling.

I'd sure like to get some good advice on what to do.

Believer,

To check your turbo seal for oil leakage, pull the connection (goes to the after-cooler) apart at the discharge side of the compressor section. Inspect for oil on the inside of the tubing and turbo. There should be no trace of oil. Good luck.

Believer: The good news is that you don't have a turbo problem. The bad news is you have a starter motor solenoid sticking. This is a common problem. You can rebuild the solenoid for a few bucks or get another starter for between $150 and $600.

It's an easy job to remove the starter and take apart the solenoid.

I have had this problem a few times and I just hit the starter again and it quits. One of these day I'm going to have to fix it right but this has worked so far. The first time I was kind of scary going against what I have always known, don't hit the starter with the engine running. But the starter is already engaged and stuck in. By hitting the switch again it gives the solenoid a kick and somesimes helps it to pop back out.

Hope this helps
