I was cleaning the air filter today, I went to check out the turbo and I noticed that the propeller shaft on the turbo has a little play in it is this ok? I currently have 73,000 on it any advice?
I have side-to-side play, not fore and aft. I still have 20 psi or so of boost no noises or anything. After turning the motor off you can hear it spool down (a spinning sound). This is my first 12 valve. I have had this truck for 3 months or so. I am just trying to learn about it. So if this is bad what should I do?
The last time I looked at my turbo shaft I could see a little bit of black smutt on the turbine fins that I wiped from my finger and noticed that It may look like it's rubbing the housing, but it's hard to tell. I do have some up and down play, but no end play at all. When I crank up in the morning it smokes a little blue but quites in about two mins.
The Cummins book, NOT D. C. , states end play (axial) should be . 001"-. 003", radial clearance, impeller to housing at least point, on the compressor side is . 012" - . 018". The book makes no mention of bearing clearance.
