A slight bit of clearance is normal. (a few thousands) The cushion of oil takes up that play in operation. Up and down play is less important than end play. (back and fourth)
The Holset on your truck can take an amazing amount of abuse and still come back for more. If you are under 40 PSI manifold you can expect hundreds of thousands of miles. Change the oil and keep a good air cleaner in it.

we had the same discussion a few weeks ago at a meeting. on guy noticed his turbo was loose an he was so affraid he wanted to tow it to a dealer. we all looked at it and then started pullin intake tubes off all the trucks in the lot. one guy had a brand new H2E with about 500 miles on it and several others had newer trucks including one with only 1500miles on it, and they all wiggled.

I guess it goes to show you, everyone talks about these things like they are a precise instrument and you flip out to find that much play in it, but they really arent. if you look at what some have been through and not just the trucks, look at some old tractors and the years of abuse on them, and not always under the best of conditions and they still run. as long as you do 2 things keep clean oil to them, and as clean as possible air to them.
